no reverse!

Just rebuilt front end of new (to me!) v reg freelander 1. Started her up and tried to drive. gearstick is allover the place, and cant locate reverse. there is so much travel that the stick is hitting both sides of the console. Also pass window won't work! Help please. ps, it was delivered on a trailer so I had never needed to get reverse until today.

id start by looking underneath at linkage from stick to gear box

Thanks all for you advice,just finished a fix to the sloppy gear change by fitting a M8 bolt with locking nut! works a treat now! It was quite a fiddle trying to get the nut on the bolt as the bolt has to go through from the bottom (not enough room to get it in from the top!) but with a slightly bent ring spanner on top and a socket on the bottom it was done in a bout 15 minutes. Result guys and thanks again for the advice.
