I have a 2004 disco with no power. When I start it up warm or cold it's like it is firing on 3 cylinders, when I move off there is alot of smoke coming out the back or unburnt fuel, I have chaged the turbo, fuel pump and filter still the same. If anyone could help i would be very gratefull
thanks

Hello Duff, sorry to hear of your troubles.

1. Are there any warnings lights staying on, on the dashboard?

2. If you open the drivers door window and put the ignition to pos II (ignition lights on but engine not started), how long does the pump run for? It should settle down after 20 seconds or so.

hi there thanks for reply. there are no lights on the dash and you can hear the pump running just when you put the foot down all there is, is smoke out the back and no power.

Did not understand that at all.

Could you answer my question 2 please. It is to test/check the correct functioning of the pump and priming procedure.

after 20 seconds it settles down yes

That's good news as it suggests pretty well that your pump is ok and there is little chance of an air leak anywhere.

Ok, with that in mind and going back to the symptoms of smoke and no power, I would be taking the rubber turbo hoses out and examining them very carefully outside and inside for any splits or delamination. Black smoke usually means unburnt fuel as you said and that often occurs when there is insufficient air entering the engine.

You don't say on your profile whether your Disco is manaul or auto, so I'm guessing manual, until confirmed otherwise.

Does this "firing on 3 cylinders" feeling only happen first thing in the morning, or every time she is started?

Cheers
Dave

Do 2004 TD5's have catalytic converters? Rescued my nephew from the motorway the other week in his Vauxhall van(?). Engine would run, lots of black smoke would allow him to run downhill but as soon as it got to an incline it just wouldn't pull. Eventually was traced to the front of the cat collapsing and blocking the exhaust.

Yes as std from the factory 2004 TD5's would have a cat, however it may have been removed by an enthousiast owner such as myself. This makes a noticeable improvement in responsiveness and mpg.

Cheers
