Hi guys
This morning my freelander felt like it stalled turning into my driveway, engine was actually still running, no power steering, God awful grinding noise almost metal on metal noise! The battery symbol appeared on my dash but the battery was replaced late last year, new injectors, new pipe work last month, all fluids are full and not leaking at all. 2/3rds of a tank of fuel! On my way home the doors automatically locked themselves a few times and obv that isn't normal either! I'm thinking it's died but can anyone think of what this could be? It's an 04 and has 141000 on the clock!

Is that simple enough to get to? My husband will look at it when he gets home but trying to get ideas on what it could be, thank you for your reply :)

just get under the drivers side and pull the inner protector up which hooks onto the engine protector you can see it from there and do not for get the torch

If its the TD4 diesel, then its probably the pulley that drives the aux belt that's gone. That would be the common thing on the TD4, but could be the tensioner.

You will probably see what it is on inspection. The pulleys are multi layered materials that act as a damper and are a lot more expensive than you'd think, so don't expect a £10 fix. I would think it best to get a OEM one rather than aftermarket, cos they sound like the sort of kit where cheap ones fail weeks after installation. Others may advise.

They are awkward to get at and very stubborn to get off I believe.

After it being looked at yesterday, all belts have actually snapped and the metal on metal is a piston :-( with its age and mileage the freelander is off to scrap heap heaven! Doubt much of the engine can be sold for spares?

Really? It's a TD4, which has a common and cheap engine. You can pick up a decent TD4 engine for under £200 and maybe another £200 to fit it. I seriously doubt you'll find another replacement vehicle as good for the cost of reparing yours.

Although I can't see how a broken belt can cause piston damage and how you accurately checked for it. To me it sounds like the bottom pulley has disintegrated.

I'm not sure how it's all happened but it's been over time, it's not just one belt it's all of them, when my husbands truck needed a new engine fitted it was £1500! And it's not something we could fit on our own :-( it's definitely got more problems then £400 unfortunately, the first thing checked was pulley and not only does that need replacing alot of other stuff needs replacing aswell!

Oh also the coolant is rapidly bubbling, no over heating or water loss but rapid bubbling! And electrics started badly playing up yesterday, locking the doors and windows coming down and up on there own lol when I wrote the post these are all things I forgot :-/

"metal on metal" is a piston? Sounds a bit strange.

If its destroyed all the belts, then the pulley must have been in a bad way for a while. They usually let you know something's up with noise and/or vibration. They're usually replaced well before they take out the belts, but maybe yours just let go in a big way.

I don't know where the water pump is on a TD4, but on my L Series its driven by the aux belts which may explain why you've had cooling issues.

Your electrical issues from yesterday were almost certainly because of the mechanical issues with the belts. They drive the alternator, so electrical spikes and interference would probably have been occurring. Just try the electrics now to see if they are all still working OK and have not been damaged.

I'm not with the car, but I would imagine the metal on metal noises are relating to the pulley dismantling itself - a common issue. If it was me, I'd be seeing if I could get a replacement pulley and belts from a breakers, fit them to the car and start it up and see how it runs. If the motor is fundamentally knackered, then replace engine or scrap - but it its OK, then get new pulley and belts.

I'm an equine physiotherapist and cannot afford to be without a car :-( I'm looking at a car today and my husband has said we will get it to a garage and see exactly the costings but unless it comes in around £500 it's not worth it as it would sell for around £850 with mileage etc

How did you diagnose a piston - did you strip some parts down and look in the bores or do a compression test?

Belts themselves cost around £20 and that drives the alternator, water pump and power steering pump so that explains the issues with electrics and heavy steering
