No MOT from May 20 2018

Anybody else heard the news...vehicles over 40 years old from the above date will be exempt from MOTs.

As long as they are not substantially modified.

Yippy...Tax free now MOT free for my 75 S3.

Is that the recommendation of a consultation or something more concrete?

I can't find anything about the date but it was announced in Sept last year as a Gov plan to come into effect within 2 years.

Has the MOT change come into effect ?

KNIGHT CALLS FOR MOT EXEMPTION CHANGE -2nd June 2016

East Yorkshire Conservative MP Sir Greg Knight, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Historic Vehicles Group, is calling on the Government to look again at the date before which classic cars are exempt from the MOT test.

Sir Greg said today: ‘Currently all vehicles manufactured before 1960 are exempt from being required to have an MOT. However, for tax purposes, a vehicle is categorised by the Government as ‘historic’ once it reaches 40 years of age.

‘This means, in effect, that there are two different date classes of historic vehicle. Those that are both tax and MOT exempt manufactured before 1960 and those that have to undergo a modern MOT but are nevertheless exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty and which are made 40 years ago, which is a rolling exemption.

‘I see no reason for this distinction and am urging the Government to merge the two dates. I believe that all vehicles manufactured 40 years ago should be exempt from both Vehicle Excise Duty and MOT as part of the historic vehicle classification and that both dates should be a rolling exemption.’

Whi decides what's substantially modified?

Any car over 40 years old will have had a fair amount done to them over the years

If it was my decision then any landy is in the 'just maintanied' section - especially mine

There has been a consultation...I took part in it as did 100s of other classic owners...looks like it happening.

Hope people dont take the **** when it comes into force...to do with old vehicle not being able to meet new up and coming EEC mot standards.

Here in France its after 30 years, then you only have to have it MOT'd every five years. I have to wait another three years, mine is a 1990. standard 200tdi 110.

I was worried they would force them off the road by claiming they don't meet immission control standards, but here in France they will be exempt.

Given that I'm the same age as my landy, free tax was about the only thing I was looking forward to for turning 40 in not too many years time! Now I have something else to make it worthwhile.

Mines 40 next year, I'm looking forwards to tax exemption but not so bothered about the MOT.

I'm happy enough to have her thoroughly checked over once a year.

If I could find a tester I could trust every year not to wreck my transmission brake I would be more that happy to keep the MOT...
I know I wont so I am thrilled at the news.

The new EU tests coming in in 2018 would have put 1000s of classics off the road forever...thank god we have a Gov with the balls to do this for us.

Since when have any MOT regs been retrospective?

The MOT for my Series is completely different than for my Civic.

Before everyone blames the EU it's worth remembering they're pushing for a 30 year exemption.

What!! It looks new

The MOT for my Series is completely different than for my Civic.
But not every tester know it.

I blame the EEC or EU for everything.
