Edited 13/6:

It's the switch as you can pull back the stalk and the dash lights up as does the actual main beam. Give the switch cable that isn't getting the juice 12v and it all works as it should.

Do you need to remove the steering wheel to remove the whole thing? I got there late and could only have a brief look...

This is what you get when you pay mates rates and your car gets looked at when everything else is done last thing on Friday and I was set on taking it fishing first thing tomorrow morning!

Thanks
Tom

Garage called to say it failed on bulbs (I knew a couple were blown but didn't have any and I thought I passed on the message to them pop some in prior to testing - either way...) but as it turns out there is an issue with no main beam. The bulbs are fine as are the earth's.

Could it be the stalk?

They'll investigate further tomorrow but as they know I use a very helpful and friendly forum for help () they asked if I could look into it.

Your help would be much appreciated
Tom

Not sure if the TD5 arrangement is similar to my 300 TDi but I had the exact same thing which I traced to a couple of connectors around the rear of the speedo - they are a bit difficult to see if they are fully engaged because there are a cluster of them closely located to each other. It was probably my own fault because i had partially withdrawn the instrument panel with the speedo cable still connected and didn't notice the connectors had pulled out.

Shouldn't be hard to trace, probably either the stalk or a relay (if fitted)

I hope you're right; after (as good as) passing the mot on Monday I've been itching to get it back and start enjoying it after 18 months of owning it (my first landy) and sorting it all out with an hour here, and a few a week or so later! If it wasn't for the delay on the new water pump arriving I'm sure they would of found this out much earlier in the week.

Definitely worth noting - thank you for posting!

EDIT: Also just remembered on the way to the garage on Monday the fuel light came on and stayed on for most (but not all) of the 15 minute journey despite the tank being half full. I hope this isn't linked to the issue above and a sign of some nasty leccy gremlins!!

They've fixed the earth issue and found out the main problem is in the switch as you can now pull back the stalk and the blue light on the dash lights up as does the actual main beam. Give the switch cable that isn't getting the juice 12v and it all works as it should.

Do you need to remove the steering wheel to remove the whole switch or will just the horn/main beam stalk come off on its own? I got there late and could only have a brief look...

Edit: armed with more info now I have just read that the switch is swapped easily, but if the stalk has died the wheel needs to come off....

Thanks

Its a ten minute job, the wheel can be a pain sometimes, the stalk/switch doesnt cost the earth.

Have you upgraded any bulbs?

Thanks.

Not done that yet but I have plans to - among others. I know they're weak as they are.

I read the switch should come off with the wheel in situe and that is is separate to the stalk? I'm hoping this is true and I just need the former...

Cheers
