All My Other 4x4 S Had Hi & Lo Box Just Wundered How The Freelander Copes With Steep Climes & Serious Mud With No Low Range,, Not That I Plan Takin It Seriously Off Road I Just Wundered( Might Do A Little Green Laning Tho)

no low range box but freelanders have a device called hill decsent control,you should have the switch on your gearstick, it works in 1st and reverse it it applies the brakes when you go down a hill so you can let go of the pedal and you wont go above 3mph down a hill :)

although i think really low spec models were not fitted with it :(

as far as going uphill goes you just rev the fu*k out of it lol
 
Muddy conditions don't require low range - given some revs the traction control is suprisingly good. Some owners find that less agressive tyres actually give better traction as a result!

Really steep decents can be a little hairy. HDC is good but will take the vehicle down to the stall speed - 4.5mph on the TD4 - which is a little quick - requires a liberal use of the brake.

Uphill is where you miss the low range as it requires a very different technique. Ok with the auto, though!

I would agree that the auto box would make up hills a little easier. Have to watch brake temperature with HDC if using for extended periods.
Lets face it, serious 4x4's need a low box. The Freelander copes well though :D
