Hi guys, Just got a 1998 XEDi 3dr, after fixing my disconnected control cables from my heater switches, im still getting no heat at all, turn the control from cold to hot and there is an audible change but no heat even when the engine is fully warmed. Engine doesn't overheat just sits perfectly half way.

Im thinking either a duff matrix or HBV (if fitted, as i had the same problem on my old rover 216)

i've done a search, but not found anything of use...

Any suggestions? or have i overlooked something obvious?

thanks

Am I just being thick? Or miss something??

You've just got yr XEDi

You've fixed yr disconnected control cables?

So what? You bought a car with a duff heater/disconnected control cables?

So you've reconnected them cos you cant take it back?

Think previously you said you were an electrical engineer so, you've checked the fuses and made sure all the wiring is ok?

All fuses etc are ok. theres no issue with the airflow controls (speed/direction).

Not had chance to get under the bonnet as yet, but that may be the challenge tonight with a torch. Will try bleeding it too, but the engine temp is fine, or would it not affect it if there were an airlock.

It might and then again it might not.

It may just need topping up ;)

Stop buggering about with a torch, get a couple of inspection lamps, one twelve volt and one 240 your gonna need a good un and often ;) :D

find the i/p to matrix and o/'p dissconect from circuit [bung up other pipes as to not loose to much coolent ] get a hose and force water down i/p should get water outer o/p [with heater in on possition] if no flow then it either the heat on off valve not operating or a fooked matrix . . . . . :)

cheers guys... inspection light sounds like a plan.

Found the matrix has been bypassed. no idea why, will look into it at the weekend. other than a fooked/leaking matrix, any other legitimate reason to bypass it?

actually, stuff it. im going to replace the matrix anyway just in case (got a new one for £40) any "easy" way to get it out/in without having to remove the fascia. RAVE and haynes say the whole fascia assembly has to come out :(

I'm afraid there is no easy way, that's why they by-passed it.

Fair chance this was one of a number of issues that made them sell the vehicle.

slow down Earthling. . . . .culd be on all the time :D

well, i have tested the matrix thats fitted at the moment. filled with water and lightly pressurised from one end and the other end blocked... no loss of pressure (went up to 7psi) after 30min... and free water flow through it... no idea why it was disconnected so its now reconnected and i have heat... Will see what happens after a good drive tonight (including a 5L bottle of water and the bit of copper pipe to bypass again should the need arise)...

Well here goes

(ordered a new inspection lamp that will run off my bosch batteries from my drill, well i have 3 of them)

It's a common problem. Lots on info on here how others have changed their heater matrix. Try to find the leak first, and go from there.

well. all done and it seems happy. fitted a new matrix only took 4-5hrs to get the dash and other bits out and back in...

Was trying to find an easy way, but because of the A/c evap in the way there doesn't appear to be one.

but hopefully... it should be fixed now, just need to do a full coolant flush as it seems it almost pure water and no antifreeze

cheers guys.:D
