Hi, I have a Freelander 2 , my automatic lights / day light running lights are on all the time but I have no high beam. I have been told its likely to be the relay. Seems like a simple job but when I look under the bonnet none of the relays seem to be identified , how do I know which is the correct one and also which one could I swap it with just to test it x

Finking about this logically... It could be it finks its dark because the light sensor says so or the relay stuck on...

Do the lights go out if yer turn oft "auto light" on the stalk and use the manual options of oft, side and head?

If yer look in the engine bay theres a fuse box by the battery. Fuse and relay identity on the inside of the box lid. Same for the fuse/relay box lids in the passenger foot well and boot.

I'm pretty sure the FL2 doesn't use relays for any lighting control, as these functions are normally done with FETs, which are internal to the CJB.

I'll look at the wiring diagram later to check.

Thank you, I have only ever used the control knob on right hand side of the steering wheel. I didn't realise there was a control on the stalk, I shall look later. I have taken the lid off the fuse box under the bonnet, there are what I had assumed were relays under there along with fuses. The diagram doesn't help me much I'm afraid, nothing that looks obviously like a symbol for lights. I wonder if it says anything underneath the relays ? Can I cause more problems if I pull one out and look ?

You must have the earlier version of FL2 where the lights were at the side instead of being on the stalk. The side switch should still turn them oft though.

Looks like it's relay R127 which is on or part of the central junction box on the bulkhead.

Hi again,
Sorry but I am really confused as to which relay it could be. These pictures are of the fuse box under the bonnet. I cant see anything that says R127

Am I looking in the right place ?
Looking at the fuses could F24 or F38 be the problem rather than a relay ?
Thanks again for all your help I do appreciate it x

Relay R127 is on, or part of, a module on the front of the bulkhead. If you remove the plastic cover on top of the battery it will allow you to see the bulkhead which is the metal behind the dash, under the bottom of the windscreen.

Fuses are wired in series with power and rated to suit the cable and max current. If the current goes above the fuse rating it will blow. You could try pulling the fuse out just to prove the headlights will switch off.

Relays are used to get a control signal to switch on/off a larger voltage and/or current, to power a circuit. The moving contacts inside can sometimes stick.

In the circuit relay R127 has the power to the headlights going through its switching contacts. We're guessing those contacts have stuck in the 'on' position, as that's something that sometimes happens with relays.

Problem is that relay is on, or part of a module. I don't know how easy it is to access or remove it as i have forgotten what it looks like. Would need to have a look at mine to check.

It could be the module has failed in such a way as to permanently switch on the head lights. Hence why I asked if the switch is changed from auto to off, do the headlights switch off?

Hi, sorry it has taken so long to get back to you all.
After all this it turned out to just be the control switch to the right of the steering wheel !!
I blame my boyfriend for sending me down the relay path, he was so sure that was the problem!
Next time I will check with you guys first
Just want to say thank you anyway and sorry for wasting your time x

Was there something wrong with the switch or just not in the right position?
