Thank you all for all your advice. I am new to mechanics, so would you be able to break it down for a novice. It sounds likeI need to take off the PTO plate. Sorry again for sounding a complete idiot again but were do I find this and will I need to drain any oil first. Also you mention LT77 is this expensive? Once I get the plate off I need to see if the splines are worn or broken. Do I also put in gear while running and see if it works.
Thanks again everyone who has responded.

I can't be bothered typing it out when there is an excellent video...:)

The landrover toolbox guy is excellent and showing you what to look for... I've learnt loads from him.

Thanks. Just so happens I found the video too. If I was to take it to a garage what sort of price do you think we are looking at. (Sounds expensive)

Half the fun of a landrover is fixing it yourself - but a complete transfer case out and gearbox mainshaft is not the place I'd start to learn.

TBH I wouldnt know - I'd do it myself so it would be maybe £200 of parts.. (eg http://www.paddockspares.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=lt77+mainshaft) and time - for a garage to do it it's quite a bit so could be £500+ I'm afraid. But I'd not like you to take that figure as read Im sure others on here can give better ideas than my rough guess.

Thanks. I would like to do it myself, but as I have never done anything like this before it all the unknown. I guess I would need a large jack to help get the gearbox out.

If you are wanting to do it yourself then get a Haynes manual and go from there, but you are going to need jacks, engine hoist and a gearbox stand - it's a rather heavy and difficult to access lump. I'd be wanting a 4 post lift myself but I'm a lazy sod and dont like lying on my back to fix things lol.

That all sounds like a lot of tools I haven't got. Thanks again

Agree with everything but the haynes comment - Sorry but the RAVE manual is both genuine and FREE - and you can learn a LOT about the other LR stuff too - a search on here will find you the link for the download....

I'll be back shortly with it to help.... Found this thread which details the download and install on a windross system...
