On tues last week my disco went in for MOT after my hard work on her:). Later that evening the drive just cut out, as in the engine still running and the loss of gears. I ended up pushing the disco into the nearest lay-by on my own with the engine running. I stopped the engine for about 10 mins and thought to myself i wonder if it will go again, and lo and behold! it did! I managed to get her home in the end. Tried to take the kids to school the next morning, and the same thing happened! Me and wife pushed her aside and walked in the end. That evening (weds) called breakdown after work and the Biatch worked again! He said he was looking for a problem and can't see one. So, then he started saying that I must have selected a false neutral, and telling me not hand brake turn etc, even tho I never do. Anyway,,,,, drove it home fine! Next morning (Thurs) I went for a test drive drove fine for 15 mins then cut out gears again tried the gears through each high/lo and diff/lock on transfer box, but, nothing! Tried every day morning and night but no movement! When I put it into 1st-5th and reverse it makes a grinding sound but no feel on the gear stick, but, on the transfer box stick. Just wanna know if any one knows what, and why, and how to fix? any help is a step closer, and is very appreciated. Mikey

So it's either: clutch, gearbox input shaft, gearbox output shaft, transfer box. My guess would be the gearbox output shaft splines are worn away.
With the transfer box in neutral, does it feel any different when you try to drive in gear to when the transfer box is engaged in high/low?

Hi all,
I ended up calling my insurance breakdown(again) and the old girl failed to move this time. The guy wanted me to put both brakes on and then select the gears while he felt around underneath my baby, and then he popped up and said "it's your gearbox mate that's gone, and it would cost you in range of £1000+ for new box and fitting". I said to the guy just get her back home and I will then speak to the wife to see what I should do, and we both want to keep her, but the guy said the gearbox, and on the form he put 'transfer box'. I'm not saying I'm good at mechanics but ain't the gearbox a complete different unit to the transfer box but are attached?..... And do you know any good land rover mechanics in the Portsmouth area, who are cheaper? Mikey

:violent: Death to the conning cwants who rips you orf!

Gearbox is not the same as the transfer box, no. No way does it cost that much to replace a transfer box, not sure about gearbox costs because you might as well do clutch etc as well if that's coming off. You could start investigating it yourself, or just send it off to a garage.

No idea about mechanics I'm afraid.

Did the guy not give a reason behind his diagnosis?
