I went under my 110 this afternoon to replace the steering damper, and froze when I saw this....

Being new, I got really worried, did some searches, and then figured out it was the wading plug and so it's not that I've been driving with an dry gearbox.... that was a relief.

My question is about the oil I see there... generally I've not seen much oil come out of this landy yet (I've been watching) and figure that this is likely some accumulated oil that has run out after I jacked up the front wheels.

Or is this something I should be worrying about?

There are only three places that oil can get into the bell housing:

- Gearbox
- Clutch slave cylinder
- Crankshaft rear oil seal

Considering the oil is black, It's more than likely to be engine oil. Spray the bell housing and your entire engine with gunk or some other degreaser and then hose it down so that it's clean. Drive it as usual for a week or so and then check again to see if any oil has collected. Also check other areas of your engine for leaks which might find there way down into the bell housing. Keep an eye on your engine oil level - does it use any? If the oil does re-appear you're looking at an engine out / gear box out job to swap the oil seal.

If it absolutely ****es out you have a problem. If it's a drip now and then like you seem to have I wouldn't worry about it. Is that a disco gearbox the bell housing loks long for a defender one?

How would I tell if it's a disco gearbox? I've only had the 110 a little while, I'd be surprised if it's not an R380 as that's what the VIN says it should be. I'll do some searches and see how to identify it for sure, you've got my curious.

looks like a short bell housing to me as gearbox is the long bit at the back of the hole

The only identification on the gearbox that I could find was "hrc2641 bsk2". Google searches are not illuminating, only showing that some other people also have the same number on their gearboxes too.

HRC2641 is a casting number - what makes you think you might have a disco GB ?
