Afternoon all,

Joined the forum because I'm looking to buy my first Disco. I keep hearing contradictory tales about these cars, so I wanted to get a bit of background before committing to one. I'm after a Mk2 manual 7-seater on as late a plate as I can afford - post-facelift is just within budget. i'm presently looking at 2 cars with 80,000 on the clock, FSH and no/minimal off-road use - can anyone advise, is there anything specific I should be wary of around this mileage? I intend to use the car for almost exclusively on-road stuff - family holidays with 4 bikes on the back etc. Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi, with only 80K on the clock you are looking at D2's that have barely got out of their nappies!
If you want to know the faults catalOgue I would suggest you read about the Discovery in the relative forum rather than have table tennis answers in this thread. Pick yourself up a copy of Land Rover World (Nov Issue) and you will see a buyers guide for the D2. This includes comments from Gary Wood at 'TD5 Alive'.
If you are in doubt about the D2 I wouldn't be overly concerned about what you read on here because all cars have faults/niggles/foibles. You will read much about different issues for the D2 on here but I will bet there are more good healthy D2s out there than those you read about here. People rarely write in praise of their vehicle but are quick to point out the lesser points.

I have had 2 D1 300s in recent years and as good as they are for what they are i would still have my D2 everytime!
In saying that, some problems with the D2 will empty the pocket far quicker than the D1, there is a price to pay for computor techno.

I would avoid dealerships unless you can get one for a realistic price with a healthy warranty. There are loads out there on the used market so plenty to choose from. Avoid silly inflated prices.
In Land Rover World they state prices start at around £4.5K. I find that very interesting, it suggests I could've made a £2000 profit on mine if I'd sold it when it was in standard trim. You can find D2's for far less than that.
