Bought a '98 300tdi 3 months ago,am well pleased as its my first disco and it runs really well, however within the last week I am beginning to have problems getting it started.

I turn the key, engine turns over but doesn't fire up, usually happens when the engine is warm and then only occaionally but it does seem to be getting worse. Sometimes I have to wait an hour or two and sometimes only a half hour before it starts again.

I have already created a great deal of anger when I blocked the unloading ramp of a ferry and I am not keen to repeat that. Reading through the posts it would seem that I have an immobiliser problem which can be fixed by running a wire from the fuel stop solenoid to the ignition.

Could that be my problem or could there be anything else causing it?

Is there any smoke from the exhaust when it's cranking over? If there is then I would expect it to be an injector leak off pipe at fault. If there isn't it'll be the spider or solenoid at fault.

It does sound more like the alarm spider overheating though. It could also be the solenoid sticking. Next time it happens, try taking a feed direct from the battery to the solenoid. If it starts it's the spider at fault. If it doesn't then it's the solenoid.

Quick update for anybody who is interested

It was a immobiliser problem so I immobilised the immobiliser by running a line from the fuel stop solenoid to the ignition and hey presto! problem solved...actually I didn't do it a mechanic did..£25:)
