Looking into buying a Land Rover but it seems a bit of a minefield! How important is it to have a VIN on the chassis? If a chassis is galvanised will it loose its VIN? I understand that if you replace the chassis and show evidence the old one was destroyed it is ok, but what about if the original chassis looses its VIN during repairing. Also, looking at the rules surrounding radically altered vehicles, would a series 3 built before the rules came in (1998) be exempt? Thanks.

Chassis number missing on galv chassis is normal. You should have a metal plate with vin number on it.
Next ask if they have a receipt for the new chassis & any build photos.
if your going to be looking at a series 3 on coils it’s probally a cloned/stolen 90.

There are photos but no receipt because it was the original chassis repaired and galvanised. Seems all very original but I don’t really know what I’m looking for. I’ll get an expert out.

if the VIN matches the plate with VIN (engine bay?) but the chassis doesn’t have one is it still alright?
So if the dumb iron is not replaced the number on the chassis should still be there? Could shot blasting and galvanising actually get rid of the stamp which is deeply stamped into the chassis?
Thanks. This is where I’m not sure. How would you tell a leaf spring chassis? Another Pre defender LR I’m looking at has supposedly rebuilt axels with discs Instead of drums - does that sound dodgy?
The vin plate thats pop rivited to the body means it matches the logbook...
However the vin number indicates the year,type and fuel it left factory with...that is what I meant...If the chassis has no number you need to dig deeper

oh, it definitely has coil springs then... that seems to be a bad sign?

I understand the designa chassis wouldn’t be the original. The problem is the seller claims it is original chassis without VIN, but it has coils... I am confident enough engine is original though so really unsure what to think about it at the moment. I’ll dig deeper...

Yes you're going to have to post a load of pictures and let us see what you're talking about. The series number should be towards the front of the dumb iron , the defender one is slightly further back more hidden by the tyre.
