Hi, I'm fairly new to this have just acquired a 1974 2dr RR which is actually in quite nice condition, but is a bit like a licourice allsort.

I dont know too much about the RR, or Landrovers in general. but I have a 1974 carte grise (french log book), the body looks right for this year, the engine may be, but it has an auto gearbox - (ok this may have been swapped later in life), the chassis seems to be excellent which is a surprise for a 36 year old car, and generally I'm very impressed.

Before I get too involved I intend to change all the fluids and give it a general service, run it for a while and see how it goes, but I am in two minds about how far to go - my pal and I both think that on the face of it this is as good a basis as you could find for a full restoration, if I go this route I m thinking I could be biting of an enormous piece of cake that will leave me floundering, but if I just keep it tidy I would be for ever wishing I had gone for a quality restoration - any advice from anyone who has been in this position before?

Secondly - the thing that really bugs me - At some point it has had some strange dashboard fitted - I have done some searching on the web and found Wood and Pickett - it looks like this, but I understood Wood and Picket to be quality improvements, this doesnt really have that feel, under the leather it is just fiberglass, and the wood is the thinest of veneers on marine ply - It's strange, it seems like too much effort for DIY and not really cutting the mustard for an expensive aftermarket job - anyway to the point - where is the best place to find a dash, and although I would like a period one if it comes to it what years will fit? to complicate it further I'm in France and the car is LHD!

Any takers?

All the best.

Hi thanks for the reply and the advice, will definitely get a copy of the book. Am very surprised about the dash being interchangeable, are you saying you can get a RHD dash and move the instrument binnacle and steering column shroud etc. over to the other side? Or have I completely mis-understood?

i have,nt got the full info at hand as my copies on top of the wardrobe and hers asleep:D and be blowed if i can remember at the moment about the entire swop over of dash but the dash binnacle and dash top are interchangable rhd to lhd, typical rover tightarse measures:rolleyes::D

bit like the sd v8 rovers big blanking plate in hole where steering wheel goes and clocks in place with self tappers so easy change over

hi, thank you both for your comments, yes just being looking at the pics, I think my "special" dash may have been put in in the 80's as the instrument binnacle is the more recent one. The bottom half of my dash is just like the LHD one in the photos you posted (albeit covered in leather), but the top half is the "special" Interesting you added the photos, because the phot of the LHD has the same air conditioning knobs and badge as mine, and I have been struggling to find this. Thanks, its all becoming a bit clearer - I think someone spent a bit of money on my car at some point in the 80's probably when the auto box was fitted too. I might keep the autobox, but I'm going to try and return the rest to original.

might be interersting to check your chassis number against the listings given in the book,as it covers a few special conversions in there as well

this is the only one I have taken so far, will try ad get some more,

If your going for a restoration, looks like you will have quite a journey. Wheels, arches, dash, gearbox are all non standard so if your want original then it's going to cost.

Thanks for all the further comments, I thhink I will not going for a back to original restoration, just a general tidy up!, I did a check of the ending yesterday so I could get some service bits, its the original engine (engine number is same as chassis number), but with Edelbrock carb and manifold, runs very sweatly, thermostat is not working, Hi range and low range work, but for some reason it seems to have more go in low range than it does in high. Didn't want to push this too far as I haven't change all the fluids yet etc.

Took all the carpets and mats out for cleaning, need to get some seat covers (does anyone know if they do them speciality fitted for 2dr range rovers?) for now.

Need to fix the headlining and am on the look out for an original dash. Once I have serviced the engine and gearbox I can check those over in a bit more detail, with a bit more testing! Did take it up a fairly deep muddy track - couldn't resist and it was great!

also,,going by your one pic..it looks like a w and picket job to me..(or monterverdi etc..)..ie tastless 80's...but if so keep as is..dont junk any of it as worth many more euros than you think maybe...???

that dash looks interesting,as do those wheels and matching arches....mirrors and side indicators 80's too..very interesting...pics please..here and on 3 door owners group please..
