I've swapped my Disco for a Freelander

<pause>

for some, this may be heresy (but maybe not in this forum ;))?

<pause>

I'm very pleased; it drives more like a car (I'm happy about this) and so far, everything works in the 4 x 4 department works as I THINK it should but....

... I'd not had the disco for long (loved the thing but too much wrong with it) and I've had a Trooper before (loved it but it did blow up - literally) so ...

... this car's a 2002 1.8S, 3 door with the 'removeable' back.... headgasket, timing belt and master & slave cylinder all done at 98K - dry (really dry, even the toolkit is 'intact' and the toolkit 'well' bone dry) - showing 99K... looks 'lovely'... Hill descent and icons associated all good... all functions except drivers side window, work as they should.

Issues are:

broken, but still working passenger 'window switch' in the console by the handbrake. Can I replace the cracked switch or do I need to replace the whole fascia unit with all the switches?

Reversing lights don't come on (the cigarette lighter doesn't work).

Drivers side window wont operate (did I mention this).

The passenger side door won't lock on the key (the remote is not 'matched' and I'll sort this through a local LR dealer?).

The alloys are a bit pants in terms of 'prettiness', and the rear drums look very 'corroded' but the brakes work great.

... and that's it, so far...

What else should I check folks?

Oh, hang on! The 'demister' seems a bit useless unless one has it on the demister function.. i.e. it mists up pretty quick unless it's on 'demist'.

All help/suggestions gratefully received,

Ez

Hello Newbie and :welcome2:

I'm a Newbie too.

Had a Disco loved it to bits, even the quirky non unlocking passenger door.
Hubby had to open door for me. Even started to call him Jeaves :bounce:
Pain in the arse though when raining.

Hi and welcome,

Check fuses F10 (20A) cigarette lighter and F34 (20A) RH front window..both in the drivers side fuse box in the cab - see if these have blown first.

Reverse lights ...same fuse as the brake lights (F2) so if they work its not the fuse, check the bulbs are ok or even in there ...if ok then go under the bonnet and take off the air filter box for better access to the reverse light switch, its mounted on the side of the gearbox below the clutch slave bracket - take off the two wires and connect together (bullet connectors) then turn on the the ignition..the reverse lights should both come on. if they do then you need a new switch...about a tenner on e bay...then Bobs yer teapot ;)

Thank you all - I'm delighted with welcome

:biggrin1:

Having owned classic saabs this last 10 years, I know how amazing forum folk are and Brack has shown the knowledge, as well as the welcome, is here in spades

Thank you - just what I need to get going.

Sounds like you got a goodun, welcome .

We mustn't temp fate!

The driver window is resolved - the fuse needed replacing. I've replaced a bulb, and tomorrow I'll have a look at the reversing issue.

However, a funny thing happened in the works car park....

The car had been locked using the key and left for several hours. The indicators flashed as they should and the LED below the speedo flashed like a mad thing and then blinked to indicate the alarm/immobiliser was armed.

I returned, opened the car door; got comfy. Key in the ignition POS 1, all warning lights came on... I turned the key to POS II and 'flut'... all electrics gone... not a warning light, clock, starter noise, blip, blop, blap - hiss, splish or splat - nothing, nada, nowt...

So I got out, locked it on the key; waited; unlocked it on the key, got in the car, and went through the usual ignition routine, and it did exactly the same thing - all warning lights bright and on for POS1, everything off when key turned to POS 11.

So, I got out, and did it all again. And this time it started! Relieved I started home and that's when I noticed the rear window - it was down; then the clock, it had gone to 1 pm; then the trip computer had set itself to 0. I knew then that somehow the battery had been disconnected (through the action of the key?).

Anyone know what happened so I can avoid it happening again? Just to remind folks, there is no remote for this car. I have to use the key.

Other than that, she seems ok, but I imagine there will be more...

Thanks for any replies,

Ez

PS Can I replace the window switch in the console behine the handbrake? One of them is badly cracked.

Something random like that happened to me a few years ago! Did it once and it's never happened again!

Oh by the way :welcome2:

And. :nopics: lol

Enjoy

If its one of these they can be teased out with a flat head screwdriver from the sides ...dont worry if the top rocker bit comes off ..it just presses back in :)

Bought :)

Thanks

The 'demister' seems a bit useless unless one has it on the demister function.. i.e. it mists up pretty quick unless it's on 'demist'

ahem, well I now know why no-one (diplomatically) commented on this I think ;)

I took the car for a 'once over' to a LR chap (man and boy); he was kind enough to take her for a good run (up lakeland hill and down lakeland dale) and commented on the following:

The good:
the 4wd, IRD etc. is as it should be
headgasket - hard to tell if done well but no obvious signs to the contrary

The bad:
heater matrix leaking - some dampness driver side well suggesting leak
occasional misfire
feels 'a bit' underpowered

The indifferent:
tailgate 'stiff', probably through mis-use
tyres not 'matched'

He suggested I take it for a pressure test...

He also showed me how to deal with the 'no start' issue detailed earlier.

SO, I will take it for a pressure test...

Having searched heater matrix issues, I'm thinking its likely I'll need to replace it, and it's a labour intensive job...

Ho hum, how much time and money will I invest? That is the question....

<large beer in hand>

Hell only knows...
