Hi All,

Been browsing the forum - loads of useful information!

However, thought it was about time to ask a couple of questions.

Long story short, I've been leasing a brand new pick-up for a couple of years (Mitsubishi). I'm into outdoor sports and would like something of my own, that I'm not too precious about.

So, after originally considering a Disco TD3 - I've changed my mind (mainly based on the terrible reputation that the TD3 has) and am looking at a Series 2.

I'm looking at bolting a roof tent to it, doing some green lane activities and will also use it for some off-road rough shooting.

So, my question is - is the series 2 still a good buy for 2020? I'm happy to spend up to £6k on one - which will leave me some left over for initial maintenance.

I'd be able to change brake pads and discs, do an oil change and filters myself. Other than that - any extra work I'd look for a garage to do.

Is my budget realistic? Any advice/tips/hints that I should be aware of before jumping in?

Thanks!

Hi, welcome to the forum.
I had a D2, loved it......
Just be aware that the chassis is made of low grade tin foil!
Superb vehicle let down by the chassis. One option may be buying a good body/gearbox/engine and fitting it to a new galvanised chassis?
Next issue is oil getting into the injector loom, easy fix tbh with loads of info on here.
Look at getting one of the last made as most of the faults had been ironed out by then.
Having had one with ACE, if I was getting another, I would opt for one without - less to go wrong.
Go for coil springs, not air suspension.
What else went wrong on mine?
Head gasket
Front propshaft (Twice)
Gearbox gave up
water pump failure
Ace pipes corroded
Air suspension gave up
Power steering pipe under the radiator corroded
Chassis rotted through, despite yearly wax oiling by me every year
AC pipe chaffed through (relocated new one)
Coolant pipe chaffed through (relocated new one)
Alarm receiver/sender (located above rear view mirrior) Stopped working
Fuel pump gave up.

Make sure what ever you buy has a good and full service history, even if the vehicle is 'self serviced', a good owner would have kept a record of what was done.

Would I buy another?
Probably!!
