Hi,

I’m currently in the market for a land rover but am a bit lost with what to get. i want one than can tow my caravan and to take greenlaning (since my wife is no longer able to hike due to disability i thought it would be a good way for her to get out and about)

i like the charictor of the old army ones that have been modernised and think i like the idea of the soft tops so it can be fully opened up in the summer and ideally it i would like 3 seats up front.

any advice on what engines, models or just anything is appreciated.

i'm quite excited about venturing into the world of landy's.

The army ones are good fun as long as you can get comfortable, 200/300tdi engines are prob safest bet specially if towing, there's always a disco1 with 2inch lift and a tankguard with removable towbar ;)

a disco 1 referres to a landrover discovery mk 1 the front grille looks kinda like a small rangerover fron the eighties and the back end looks a little like the defender but the door goes all the way across but imho id be verry careful buying one of those they seem to be getting stolen left right and centre so make sure you get it hpi checked before you buy it but overall discoverys are a hell of fun and pretty comfortable to drive and an example my mates disco 1 will tow his sisters pageant 20 foot caravan all day with no problems (like theres nothing there to be honest )

if comfort isnt your main forte and you really like the older style landrover the nearest other option to your criteria would be a defender 90 this does have 3 seats up front but has slightly more inferior seats to the disco but are a lot easier to work on yourself keeping running costs down and can pull anything you could wish to attatch to the back end ive seen one of these with what looked like a 24 foot brand new caravan on the motorway i was doing 75 at the time and he shot past me looking like he was knocking on the door of 100mph or ther abouts weaveing past other cars like the caravan wasnt there it amazed me

i cant tell you exactly what to buy as at the end of the day its your money and youll be driving it all i can do is tell you what i know with the advice of reading threads and stories on this forum and asking questions of people who do this and own this type of vehicle personaly im a series 3 man just getting back into it after a 6 year break
best luck with the hunting
regards john

all i can say to you is find may be 10/20 landys you like and test drive every one, no 2 landys drive the same

i was looking for my second landy a few month ago, i was going to get a second disco i test drove loads but non of them felt as nice to drive as the one i had. i look at a few series 3 but wasn't that impressed with them, so i started to look at 90's and the second 90 i saw was the one for me.

Thanks for the replys so far, i'm taking the info on board.

i've been searching the internet for ones for sale but i've not managed to find one thats quite what i'm i'm looking for yet. i've tried ebay, milweb and carsandclassics as well as a couple of forum sale sections.

any suggestions of good places to look?

also what sort of price should i be expecting to pay for a good mechanically sound vehicle, i've seen some suspiciously cheap. i'd rather pay up to my limit and get my moneys worth than buy a load of problems.

Umbongo theres a chap on Flea Bay called YanTheLandy hes based in bolton/manchester he normaly sells his landys for £3000 some good some crap i suppose.

Ive never bought off him before but i have chatted on the phone to him many times when i as on the look out for the one . Dont bother haggling with him as he wont budge on his asking price and he will end auctions early.

I think thats why i didnt do business with him in the end because he wouldnt haggle.

Go for series 3 or a defender SWB these are what i prefer,it took me at least 3 months to find the one i have now so happy hunting buddy and good luck.

Sorry for jumping onto this one.I would like to know whats the best site to keep an eye on for a good ex army /raf lr defender.I wont be getting one for a few more years or until i have the funds.
If anyone can help thanx very much.
