HI!!

I am to pick up my landy on Sunday. Anything I should know before I pick it up?

I've never even had a 4x4, let alone a land rover!

I watched the Land rover instructional video on you tube, which shows you how to select the different ranges.

Do you have to select 4 wheel drive when you want it? Or is it always 4 wheel drive?

It's a '73 109" 3 door, with a 3.5cc LPG engine. It's got tax and mot.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

if its an original series then yer need to select 4wd when yer want it. if you do a search on here there is atleast 2 posts that explain what yer need to know about what knob does what

folk it am in a good mood so here yer are

Red lever forward, yellow knob up : high ratio 2wd selected
Red lever forward, yellow knob down : high ratio 4wd selected
Red lever back, yellow knob up: low ratio 4wd selected (always 4wd in low)

Cheers for that slob!

Someone at work advised me to take a cushion and some earplugs!

I have to drive it 300 miles to get it home.

Thanks for your help.

Ok, so basically I need to prepare for a breakdown, and make sure I know how to fill up both fuels(and where the switch is to switch between the two).

Anything else?

Oh and it's only 170 miles, not 300 like I thought!

Everything went fine!

I got her back on Sunday afternoon. The passenger door popped open a couple of times, as did the drivers door, and the drivers window fell against my head as I was driving but other than that she didn't miss a beat. I had some teething problems trying to start her, but got the hang of it and now she starts on the button every time.

What was most embarrassing was Monday morning I thought I'd take it to work to show my colleagues, this was the morning after the gales and loads of rain. I got it stuck on my front garden!!!!!!

Some 4x4 lessons are needed I think!

The surface is grass on clay, and there is a ledge to go over to get onto the road. I tried just driving off normally (before I knew it was stuck!), then I just pushed the yellow stick and tried to ease it up trying not to loose traction, but I did! So then I tried low ratio, and I just could not keep the grip.

I just happened to have a couple of scaffold planks laying in the front garden, so I tried putting one in front of the front wheels and one in front of the back wheels, hoping they would make the ridge less severe, and give a little more traction, but that didn't work. I ended up going as far forward as I could, put the planks behind the rear wheels in line, reversed as much as I could onto them, and then give it some welly in first, high ratio 4wd. It went forward then it started to slow where the ledge is, so I floored it and it managed to bump over the ledge. That certainly got the neighbours attention! It makes a hell of a noise with that dustbin size exhaust it's got!

Then, on the way home on a back road there were flood warning signs by the side of the road, so I went cautiously forward to see what they meant by "flood", and found that yes, it was certainly flooded!! It was about 40' long and I know the road dips there and guessed it to be about 2' deep. I wouldn't have attempted it in my Renault megane! But seeing as I had my new acquisition I decided to give it a bash!

I put it in first and floored it, trying to keep the engine revs up high enough to give the exhaust enough pressure to keep the water out! It turns out my estimation of how deep it was, was a little out!! I had water coming into the cab, I think it was up to the wheel arches, I certainly couldn't see the wheels! However it got through it, and thank god too, s there were a few people standing around in the rain with fluorescent jackets on trying to sort it, and it would have bee most embarrassing!! I got out the other end, took a turning, and it conked out about 100 yards down the road!

I left it for 5 or 10 minuets then it started again and off I went! It was a bit nerve racking, but fun at the same time!

low ratio is wot its sez, LOW ratio, have yer ever tried to spin yer wheels in a car in 2nd gear?
if so you'll be aware that its easier to spin em in 1st, and low ratio is a hell of a lot lower than 1st so yer wheels will spin very easily

lot sof folk make the mistake of thinking that low ratio will give yer more grip on loose or slippery surfaces..it won't.

if yer spinning yer wheels you need to try a higher gear not a lower one

First thing to do is draw £3,000 out of your account (or preferably your wifes). Then take all that cash and throw it in the wind. Next get some overalls, get them greasy, get the back door greasy;cups, plates, shoes...get them all greasy. When your (previously) nearest and dearest has had enough of this, drain the sump oil onto the drive. No Self respecting Series owner has a clean drive. Thank which ever god you worship for travelling each mile with out breaking down. On no account should you state "O.K. I`ll see you in ten minutes." and get in the landy....cuz you won`t. Your best investment will be to enroll in cryogenics and reduce your core body temperature; the notion of being warm when driving is now a thing of the past. Buy some lamps. Loadsa lamps. You know you want to. I did. Got enough lamps to light up the Serengetti. Anyway it`s da law. You gotta have lamps. Oh and get some.........Then drive it. Look with pity at Beemer X5 drivers, utter contempt at Shoguns. Clearly they`ve got it wrong. Landys...love em.

Having just picked up my first Landy - 88" Series 3 [had to drive from gatwick to North Dorset last night!] this thread was welcome and the last post from michael was a cracker. I drove 150 miles never going over 52mph as the seller advised. [does not have overdrive] Is this a sensible limit for my 25 yr old beauty?
