Hi all,
Just introduced myself on the introduction forum but hi anyway!
So my 2003 td4 developed a fuel smell around the front end, then today was difficult to start and then later today whilst driving at 50mph went into limp mode, management light cane on then car cut out.
Fuel dropping from belly pan so unsure of exact location but I’m thinking hp injection pump has gone? Could it be just a hose or is that wishful thinking from me?
Was going to get under the car tomorrow and have a look.
If it is the pump how long does it take to overhaul it yourself?
Thanks in advance

If it is the pump get it re-conned ...

An adult will be along soon to put me back in bed ... nighty night

Would it not be advisable to simply lift the bonnet and have a look for a leak?

It is highly likely that it is a seal on the injection pump, but then it might be a leaking fuel pipe/hose or a leak back pipe etc.

I don't suppose it would throw the MIL light, but when my L Series started spewing fuel it was perished leak back hoses - it was obvious when the bonnet was lifted and the acoustic cover removed - and a cheap run of hose cut to the right lengths and fitted solved the problem.

I have obviously lifted the bonnet and looked, nothing leaking from top end but as I said there is fuel dripping from belly pan so until I take that off the exact location is unknown, I think it is the pump but hoped it could just be a pipe but was asking if the symptoms lean towards the pump and how long it would take to overhaul within new seals etc
☺️

You'll need to take the sump guard off and get under the front with a powerful torch and the engine running. It could be the HP pump or any of the multitude of low pressure fuel lines. The HP pump head seals can fail, mine did last autumn. I re-sealed the pump myself, but the corrosion on the body just stopped the seals from working. I fitted a £50 second hand eBay replacement which sorted the leak. If the HP pump leaks, the engine normally runs ok however. If a low pressure line fails, then engine will stop.

Ok, one slight problem, she won’t start at all so hoping I can see the leak once I get underneath and get the guards off, thanks for your reply though, fingers crossed it is s fuel line!

If its a low-pressure pipe whether the engine is running won't matter as it will be the electric lift pump pushing fuel out. So have the ignition on when checking.

If it's low pressure it might show the leak as it tries to prime with the ignition turned on or when cranking.
