Hi all

Joined the forum a short while and am looking forward to buying a Defender I think:eek:
I haven't owned a Landrover for 17 years then I had a 3.5L Range Rover and before that a 109" Safari, after spending a fortune on the Range Rover I swayed off and bought a freshly imported diesel Pajero then again, a newly imported Toyota Surf which were both good motors but a little complicated for me [to many gadgets].
For the last 15 years I've owned VW campers mostly being bays and splits and have just sold my latest split screen to fund getting a Landrover.

Before taking the plunge I was hoping to run a few things by you guy's as I'm unsure whether I want one just because everyone else has them round here, we've moved into the middle of a farming community and most of my new friends are farmers. We now go to log and pole sales where we buy our fire wood in trunk form as it's cheaper even after having to pay for someone to collect/deliver it for me, we have two smelly dogs that after running through the dykes jump into the back of my current motor [Subaru Forester] and then shake, it's worse when we've taken them to the beach and they smother everything with wet sand:rolleyes:

Right reasons I think I need one are:
To be able to purchase a decent sized Ifor Williams trailer [12'+], drive into fields and collect my own wood [as well as building materials as our house is a fixer uppa].
Having a vehicle with plenty of room in the back for the mutt's that I can wipe out easily enough afterwards.
Having a motor that is common round here so hopefully if I have any problems I'll have some help/advice.
Having a motor that is hopefully a little easier to work on that the jap ones I've owned in the past.

We live in an area that we love, it's only a 10 minute drive to the beach and we're surrounded by fields and farm land, we don't have to use the motor much as I even walk to work, I'm hoping fuel economy won't be to much of an issue as this will be our only motor, definitely want a diesel this time though as my neighbour reckons he gets more mpg out of his 90 than I do out of the Subaru:eek:
There are occasionally 5 of us when the kids are home, mostly it's just me and the missus but it would be better if we can seat 5 comfortably.

I don't do off roading as my job doesn't pay enough for me to go out breaking things on it, again it'll be our only motor and living out here we couldn't be without a motor if it was off the road just in case.

Right do you reckon above warrants me buying a Landy?
if yes to the above what model should I be looking for [budget around £5k]
Lot's of different engines out there, what's the easiest to work on? then most reliable?
Can I have one as my only motor or is it better to buy something else as well [Subaru's going]
I don't know all the models available, is there a guide as to what model gives what spec?
What should I steer clear of?
Is a 110" more juicey than a 90"?
Been told to try and get a TD5 is this best for me or just because my neighbour has one?

Really appreciate any guidance from you guys especially if any of you own one that is your only ride.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, much appreciated.

Brian
