Hello all :)

My name is Robert, living in Glasgow, Scotland.

At present i do not own a LR, but currently on the look out for a 4x4 as my next vehicle. I have narrowed my list down to 4 different kinds, Discovery 2 TD5, RR 2.5DSE (the ones you might not like lol), Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.1TD and a Shogun.

Personally the Shogun is the one trailing behind so then consider the other 3 (which 2 fall into the bracket of this forum).

Really im looking for some honest advise regarding the TD5 and the DSE, to do with reliability, how they perform on and off road, what to look out for ! Im not really looking for a generalise statement of "land rover is the best" and thats its, more a justified reason as to why it might be the best, peoples experiences etc....

I know just joining and asking a lot :)

I really hope you can help

Many thanks in advance

Robert

Hi and :welcome2:

I'm on my 3rd Discovery, started with a 200TDi long time ago had no problems with it other than the dreaded white flaky stuff around the doors.

Had a 50th Anniversary 300 TDi, bought it from SHB in Airdrie, lovely spec but high mileage when bought, kept it a few years and again not many problems.

Bought the TD5, 5 years ago when it was 6 years old and had covered 65k.
Since that time I've had a new radiator, air suspension compressor, clutch, Resistor pack for the blower and 2 Fuel Pressure regulators.

Love the Discovery and suits my purpose - towing the boat, wife, kids, dog etc etc, not to keen on the New Disco 3 and 4 model, personally think it looks more like a transit van and again reliability seems to be an issue with the clutch etc.

Good luck looking, plenty out there, just dont jump at the first one you see.

Thanks for your quick response :)

With the work i do, I recenly got to work on a Disco 3 and love it, I know what you mean about the "van" look .

Size is not the biggest concern (acutally i lie, I wanting a large luggage area as wanting to change from using my van to the 4x4), another important factor is how well it will work in the snow as we know the winters are getting worse and the country comes to a stand still when it snows. I remember in the winter just past and whilst i was stuck (even in my van) folk were crusing past in their LR and RR (i did laught at the X5 owners thinking they could do the same!) and i thought to myself, thats the way forward...but then with the power of the internet, well more youtube, I like to the idea of going off road, nothing too major but a bit of fun with narly standard.

The reason i considered the Jeep is because of the luxury size of it, its very well spec'd for the price inc elec seat, heated seats, auto etc......and the 3.1TD engine sounds fantastic for a diesel. So the comparisson in spec wise i guess is the RR DSE with the leather and heate seats etc.....but with the reduction in ground clearence means off road abilities are not as much fun.

What sort of servicing costs are involved with the RR or LR ?

Whats the main differences between the Disco 1 and 2 ?

Hello from Falkirk, i stayed in Woodhill for 20 years, i loved my Shogun and didn't have any probs with it but these guys on here will soon tell you i'm no judge of cars as i now have a Freelander.

Thanks Kan0, As much as a like the Shogun, personally i think its a dated look now, kind of happens with all jap cars....Where i Woodhill were you ? Im not far from there, and used to live there before down next to the bus terminus at the school :)
