Hi Folks,

I'm new here so please go easy on me. I have been looking at Discos for sometime now and this afternoon put a returnable deposit on one at a local garage.

It's a 2008 57 Reg LAND ROVER Discovery 2.7 Td V6 HSE, looking at it its immaculate. The price was £18k the only thing that bothered me was that it has done 108k miles. I have been informed that the engine and turbos were replaced at 75k.

I still have to the chance to get out of this deal as the garage needs to show me the full service history which they are getting from Landrover on Monday. They have assured me that this in place. They said it only had one owner and he was a company director, so I'm guessing motorway miles if they are telling the truth.

What would your experience say on this, as I'm pretty green on this but keen to learn as much as possible. I only do about 5k miles a year. It will come with a full years MOT and a 1 month/1000 mile warranty. Should I get the AA or someone to look over it first?

I intend to keep this disco for many years and look after it. I'm just wary about the miles/new engine thing. In some ways I think the new engine is good in others I'm thinking if it needed a new engine what else is it going to need soon.

Thoughts and opinions much appreciated, £18k is a lot of money to me.

Thanks in Advance,

Mark

If I was spending 18 grand on a motor, service history or not I'd want more than a 1 month/ 1000 mile warranty:eek:

Walk away, there's loads out there with less mileage and with the original engine !!

If the dealer were to offer a 12 month warranty...... Maybe just maybe I'd consider it

What you have to realise is with high mileage it's not just the engine and turbo that's done that mileage, the gearbox, transfer box and everything else has done that mileage

If its all motorway miles it will have been using high range all the time, wouldn't surprise me if the previous owner didn't realise what the other gear lever was for ........

£18,000 for a D3 with 108,000mls? Walk away quickly.

That is an enormous price to pay for a Land Product with that many miles.

If you are only going to use it for 5000mls par an have you considered getting a tidy late model TD5 Disco II. You could buy one with the same mileage for approx £5000 to £6000 and so the worst you could lose in depreciation is probably in the order of £3000 - whereas if you go ahead with the You'll lose £10,000+ and the D3 is reputed to be DIY unfriendly so you'll be in the hands of garages, whether they know anything about the vehicle or not !!!

Even if I have the money I wouldn't spend that much on a vehicle that wil be used so little.

Thanks for the advice here folks, looks like you have prevented me making a big mistake. Hope it isn't too hard to get my £500 back.

I will come here again and do some digging prior to putting any further deposits down.

When buying a Disco3, don't buy one with miles on it, and don't buy one with the manual box.

Also, the 105k mile service is both the cam belt and the HP fuel belt replacement. The body will have to come off to do this, so the service is going to exceed £1000 in most cases. If you are going to buy close to this mileage/age, then get the seller to do the work, and insist on seeing the invoice of the work, as most normal car sales places will probably say it has been done when it actually hasn't.

Other issues are wheel bearings and abnormal tyre wear due to suspension bush failure. Diff failure and generally just poor servicing using the incorrect fluids.

Incorrect. The body doesnt have to come off to do the fuel pump belt. To replace both belts take approx 4-5 hours. Parts cost is around £150
If you can find a good Indy, you can pretty much half that bill ;)

To the OP, head over to Disco3.co.uk
You will find everything you need to know over there, inc common faults, and a buyers guide :)

A full service history should be to hand..........if not, all someone has to do is buy a service booklet, and get a garage to stamp it. And it may have had a warranty engine replacement if it had a ful LR service history, which would have the LR dealer paperwork to show the replacement engine........if all that is not to hand, and you are only getting a 1 MONTH! warranty, it sounds like a car that has not been very well serviced or looked after, and LR were not interested in a warranty claim.

Get your deposit back. If you think it is going to be awkward, then lie, give them a sob story, any old crap to make them feel sorry for you......It doesn't matter how you do it......£500 is £500.

Good luck.
