hi folks- just joined the site- used to have a shogun (yeah i know) - now i'm looking to get into the world of discos- looking for a starter vehicle (diesel) under a grand - any advice would be welcome

Watch out for RUST!

Welcome to the site, Im new too, the advice i would give when looking for a disco is: Go and see as many as you can!

Check for crunching in gears between 2nd and 3rd and visa versa!

Check behind the cylinder near the bulkhead for leaks from the head gasket on tdi's.

Check inner sills, boot floor and inner arch/wings for rust!

Sunroofs tend to leak so if you find one without, Game on!

Electric windows and central locking, esp back door tend not to work! Not hard to fix but a good bargining tool!!!

many thanks folks, got a 93 tdi , head was gone on it but got it at the right price and with a full landrover service history £450 now runs lke a dream

cheers martin - bit of a late reply lol! - i got me a 3 door disco in really good condition - , you were right about the head gasket at the rear of the engine , the seller tried to convince me it was the exhaust manifold ! at the rear of the engine ? !!! so i used it as a bargaining tool and got it for £ 400 - top end rebuild cost £200 so quids in - now doin all the renovation stuff, tryin to get it back to its original look
