Newbee with a ?? .... car mp3 (freelander 98)

first time here

so hi to all first,

could smeone please tell me, how difficult is it to change ,my cassate player with a CD/MP3 player and also factort fitted speakers..

bear in mind i have no knowledge of doing it before..

Not hard tae do, just take out old one and put in new one. If connectors dont fit, go to halfords and get an adaptor thingy. Nowt wrong with the original speakers. , try thum furst with new player then decide.

as i said before, i have not much knowledge of freelanders & car sterros either..

the quality of my speakers is not that great. would it be same in all speakers in freelander?

so would new speakers wont make a differnce at all..all i am looking for is good quality sound in the car but i am not getting it from my factory fitted speakers...

When I had me '99 xdi I swapped the factory radio with a fancy flip down thing with quite a bit of power and the original speakers were more than upto the job. Like I sed, try a diffrunt radio furst and then see if there's any diffrunce

also experiment with your front/back fader controls. I would say that the quality of the sound from the rear speakers isn't as good as that from the front, so fading the rears down a bit seems to help

Managed to remove the head unit from the Front Panel. i am going to buy a new head unit. what power would be good? i.e. RMS or watts??

also how would i know weather it would fit in??

4x25 watts works fur me. Most units are a standard fit, if yer unsure ask the place where yer buying it from.

When you go to buy, bring the old unit down so to compare two things. Firstly the size (They should all be more or less the same size as it is an industry norm)
Secondly, You would have disconnected three things at the back (Thats if you had the normal clock and 4 if you had the one that displays the radio station) 1 plug for power, 1 plug for speakers, one for the ariel and as above one for the clock display.
MAKE SURE THAT THE NEW UNIT HAS THE SAME PLUG FILTTINGS. Otherwise if you have to buy an adaptor it can be costly depending on which one you need. Chances are though the plugs will be the same on the new unit as LR used the most common. (One thing they did get right), ou and lastly if you had the stations on the clock, this will no longer work, and possably the clock too!

hey all thanks for the replies, m not botther about the clock not working, as the display is a bit fuzzy anyway....all i m concerbed about is the quality of the music..

any head unit advice? budgedt 100£ (also if possible incdule speakers as well) please

You can get a new clock from a breakers or EBAY. really easy to fit. Just get the one without the radio stations. As for head unit. What ever you feel comfortable using as some are pretty complex. I would suggest if you have an MP3, get one that lets you plug in straight away. As for speakers, stick with the oridginals, you may be surprised, as they are good. If you go and buy some new ones, front and back, you might find that they just dont bolt in and you might have to do modifications to the inner door etc....

go for the lazy boy option buy an FM transmitter for your MP3 and use the original head unit. less than 5 quid from ebay and no quality loss (well hardly any onsidering its MP3).

hey matt, but i have heard that old head units dont deliver enough power to the speakers, hence not very clear....i dont think fm transmitter would improve the quality, will it? please let me know..

You must try a new stereo with the original speakers first. In most cars a better head unit makes a huge difference to the quality of the sound that you get through the factory speakers. Only once you are satisfied that a new head unit alone is not enough is it worth buggering about with the speakers.

Get an aftermarket stereo with an Ipod interface or aux input. Dont **** about with Itrips nd FM transmitters theyre a waste of money.

On a seperate note my ariel has all of a sudden gone crap. Not sure why, its just occured to me to check it is screwed in right but i rekon water ingress might be part or all of the prob. It was fine until a week or so ago. Any ideas?
