So i've driven my 110 to whitby on new year's eve. Hills, up and down, turbo 1bar most of the time .... then I noticed smoke inside the cabin. Hood up, smoke coming out of dip stick hole. Puff puff puff, and spraying little drops of oil too. Managed to get to my destination point though, then started the motor next day. Barely started (no problems before) then i noticed lower than usual RPM and strange vibrations - like it worked only on 3 cyls. Spoke to my mate and he said - piston rings, or hole in the piston. Now the question is, do you know any proper way how to sort this out, without replacing whole engine? I spent thousands for rebuilding this 110 and now engine - I'm loosing faith, my wife said - not again.... Maybe you know any good garage in Leeds area, that could do something with problem for reasonable price...

Hehe - I've had 2.5TD - with similar symptoms :D

It's 200tdi. I know i can spend £1500 for reconditioned block, crankshaft, pistons etc - with fitting. Is there any other option? (like repairing just one piston or someting)
Personally I cant do anything myself - no garage, car on street...

Sounds like an expensive job if it goes into a garage. They are going to spank your arse with that.

Not sure if gonna be fixing it... may be just head gasket, but it's more probable that it's piston/piston ring...

get on the look out for another rotten disco (IS IT A DISCO CONVERSION OR A DEFENDER) if it is a 200 tdi disco conversion you got all the bits you could buy a rotten disco for 300-500 and drop it in in a weekend. if its a defender 90 ie orignal 200 you might have to go to the expense of a garage is it crankcase pressure engine venting its sump oil

pistons piston rings or head unless the heads cracked would not be a hard job just buy the 90/110 haynes manual and follow that ive followed the haynes with little mechanical knowledge and its worked out cheaper than garage you dont count your own time. took 5 times longer mind

Well, as I mentioned before, have no space do do any jobs (also some medical againsts) so it must be done by some blood sucking mechanic... Maybe I'll just sell it for some stupid price and have no more reasons to worry... ...and it's genuine 200tdi with turbo on top.

thats it with landys they are not reliable if used everyday especially the older ones .. so you either gotto love them or get very ****ed off with the bag of **** because its not (will it go wrong ) there always something wrong with them

Sorry but thats BS I use my '87 90 everyday for work and Ive never had any probs with it , you look after it and it will look after you .
If you just drive it and dont really care for it then yeah it will break down on you .

Note to self dont buy a landy from bobbydog ------- :D :D :D :D :D :p

I agree. My 90 has never let me down. I've only had a couple of little problems, and it's a 22 year old vehicle. I've had loads more problems with my Laguna, and that's half the age, and it's done about 20k less miles!

Well, i've taken care of my 110 very much... every single detail has always been fixed, all the oils changed far more frequent than necessary, timing belt and all that... I know **** happens and all, it's just a bit - unexpected within dec/jan period. So guys, what could you could you recommend engine-recon wise - to do this properly so it will run for another 120kmiles - that isn't hell-expensive. It's in the Leeds area and I cant do any repairs by myself...

im only speaken from my experience okay won landy on ebay bad idea buying blind looked okay recently had new chassis driving her home its smoking like **** next day green laning the clutch goes leak on the slave cylinder bad . get home cant turn the engine off so i stall it **** loads of oil in filter . put a new engine in off a disco all good goes lovely then alternator breaks down at 10 oclock at night no lights have to ring rac ONLY SPEAKING FROM MY EXPEREINCE

you are a lucky bastid are'nt you :D
nearly as good as the luck i get ;)
the way i look at it now is every thing you replace/repair is 1 less thing that should go tits up in the distant future
my old 90 has had all the ancillaries replaced the last few years ie;starter, altenator, pas (pump and box)

This is my 4th landy, before i've had 2x90 and disco300 - ALWAYS have been proud of them despising all the faults. selling them then buying another. Same here - rare genuine 200tdi into which I put half of my heart and overall income... Presumably after this repair - the gearbox will go to Ashcroft along with the transfer box, turbo may go as well as the injector pump - generally i'm guessing £4000 more and it will have all parts new - then chassis one day maybe... I was pretty sure today that I'm gonna sell it but my wifie said - what the hell, let's fix the bastard - we'll eat bread and butter for some time but will have a landy one step closer to perfection... :) I've heard there are specialists doctors that can treat people from chronic landroveukemia - anyone has a number? :D
