Current on the look out for a new work landy. I love driving my 110 everyday but the insurance is killing me (most arnt happy with the level of mods, high mileage etc...)

So looking for either a D2 or a D3 but cant quite decide which.

Probably would prefer an auto just to make the daily drive easier. Would be doing roughly 350miles a week mixed motorway, country lanes and London hell traffic.

Both would be kept somewhat standard bar flat roof rack and a map and a big intercooler on the D2.

I like the idea of a D2 auto, Td5 engine which I know well, cheap parts and easily fixable. Plus only a cheapish unlock code for the nanocom and got diagnostics.

But its the same thing again really but give me the excuse to put a VNT in the the 110 and the hybrid in the D2 :p.

What is the auto box like on a D2? Is it actually any good?

D3 is a newer machine, much more refined and overall a much nicer road car. However more expensive and potentially high bills for repairs (torque converter, cam belts, turbos)

Massive boot and would suit what I need it for perfectly.

Both would be 99% road cars.

So what kind of MPG can I expect from a D2 & D3 auto?

Is the D3 manual any good? Seen a few for decent money.

Should have roughly £4k to spend so help me decide.....

Hi

mpg for a D3 is around 20 around town 30 on a run

The 6 speed auto boxes are extremely smooth , can hardly tell the gears are changing

on a D3 watch out if they have sidesteps fitted , become a water trap

ur looking around £6 k for a half decent sorted D3 with around 100k on the clock

the higher the model the more the ins is , base I think is group 32 HSE group 37

5 seat D3 were coils , 7 x seaters are all air

Cheers thats still better than the 110 fuel wise.

£6k is well out of budget. Its £4k max

have a look on the D3 forum, they do come up for that price range but will need work, or high mileage

ie might need the wishbones replacing , there a bitch because the bolts seize solid and access is very tight , took me 2 x days to get one wishbone off, but since found some small air tools that would make it easier next time round

base models are cheaper, that’s what I’ve got so comes without the satnav and has manual seats , I fitted electric seats which really do make a lot of difference

belts and oil pump is a must , 2005 is cheaper road tax

I havnt i was going to ask you cheekily :D

Thank you!

no probs and not cheeky at all, can easily sort something out so u can at least then know what they should be like

just pm me plse when ur ready and can set aside some time for u , also show u around what to look for

So you want a road car with some off-road ability. Your money is in good D2 territory.

Now to D2.

Chassis rust. Mine is patched. Will need rear 3rd before long. But I may go galvanized route.

Gearbox is ok. Reliable if not pushed. Not quite up to GM R boxes in quality but ok.

You know the engine. Will need stage 1 unless you change the torque converter.

Air springs are good. ACE is brilliant. It is possible to lift an inside wheel on tight corners.

Traction control is quite good, handy on wet roads. Snow I prefer diff lock.

Interior. Seats are comfy. Heated screen is good. Climate is fine. Aircon is powerful when it is working. So if not may need a regas.

Not having any goes at D3 except is your budget enough. If it is try one, if not get best D2 you can find.

Banks to be honest if you got a D2 yes it’s less to go wrong price wise but you will be working on it every minute of your spare time, is it really worth the hassle and loss of time? Perhaps someone else will not agree with me but I used to have a D2 td5 manual, it never left me stranded but was such a money pit

A friends D3 is doing 14mpg around town. My auto td5 D2 does 18 plus. The D3 is fabulous at everything but for £4k you would have to have balls of steel to buy one. A £4k D2, if you do due diligence, should be much less risk. Its not as nice as a D3 to use as a car but personally, the D3 looks like a dog compared to the D2!
The auto box in my D2 is ok nothing spectacular

Agree about the auto box on the d2, Iv had mine few months and sometimes feel it change and it is revvy up hills, some fit the bigger torque converter, I’m thinking of having a stage 1 remap, however it’s easy to work on, gearbox is smooth enough and it’s a old box from the Range Rover classic days, so well known to people and has proved to be reliable, easy to service and gives long life if fluid is changed each year or so.
