New wheels and tyres - which way would you fit them?

I've going to fit my new steels with mud plugger tyres soon - two of them are brand new and 3 are worn but still have plenty of tread. There is a difference of about 10-40 mm from the new to the old. Would you fit the new ones on the rear and the worns on the front or the other way round? I was thinking it won't make much difference but would it feel weird to drive having the new ones with more tread on the front and would this have an impact off road? I guess with 50/50 drive split, it won't make a bit of difference.....

Haha - I didn't even think about trying to change direction when off the road in the muck! New ones on the front it is then....

also, not sure if you have alloy wheels, but if you do, you'll need new wheels nuts for the steel wheels..

Yeah I got that covered, got a set off ebay for about £8.

That may be good advice on the road, but if you're talking off-road then steering is the thing. Put the good ones on the front.
On road, my front tyres wear quicker, so I've got the newer ones on the front, hoping I may be able to change all four at once one day. I'm also aware that worn tyres can aquaplane, particularly at high speed on the Autobahn, and I'd rather have good ones on the front to steer by (although once I notice any aquaplaning, usually at 3-4mm, I buy new ones asap!)
