Which tyres do you think are the best for a 2006 Freelander?

I agree that we are obviously happy with the tyres we have. Mine too completely changed the handling and safety of my Freelander.

I run heavily loaded for long distances in extreme temps (36 to 40 degrees) and needed something a bit more robust.

I too have looked at the cornering forces acting on them and there is a whole lot of difference between the sidewall distortion on my 235/55 17 V rated 4X4 ones and the same size W rated 'sports' jobs - the Ws are much stiffer and 'bumpier' in that they do not absorb much road irregularities, but really give meaning to the expression 'cornering on rails'.

Winter is on it's way now so more tyre threads will no doubt be coming.

A/T tyres versus dedicated 'snow' tyres no doubt.

Yes we does need more snow. Last year just wasn't enough.
 
"WOW" What a difference 4 new tyres make, all my worries gone in an instant. There was me thinking the prop bearings had gone again, the diff was on it's way out, wheel bearings were about to explode, and all it was was two cr@p tyres I had put on after visiting Kwikfit with a puncture. So there you have it straight from the horses mouth.

Tyres fitted were Pirelli Scorpion STR. I'm one happy Freelander driver again.

When I asked about V rating as an alternative (higher speed) they wouldn't fit or sell them to me. Tyre manufacturer said something about load dynamics. So I went with 98H as thats what LR ses so I won't get problems with tyres or insurance.

The standard Synchrones were actually 97H (perfectly adequate load capacity) but they were often in short supply and tyre stockists seemed to have no problem in stocking the more expensive reinforced 101H.

AFAIK Landrover did fit 101H Synchrones to some Freelanders, but the vast majority had the 97H ones.

I’m more than happy to say changing the tyres has revolutionised the ride and handling. After the long drive back from a free LR experience day driving a Freelander 2 I realised my Freelander wasn’t happy. The Freelander 2 suspension set-up is betterer than the Freelander 1, so I’d never be able to make it the same, but there was defiantly something wrong with mine which either needed fixed or improved. Steering wheel vibration… noise… cornering… mpg… all fixed now and a huge sigh of relief that my Freelander is happy once again.

LR fitted many different tyres over the years. They changed supplier for all sorts of reasons. We'll never know the full story. Wear was an early issue. They changed suggested pressures too. As betterer tyres come out they change make or/and model. Also they put different rated tyres on different sized rims. Tell your insurance compnay what tyres you have and this will cover your back. :crazy_driver:
 
On about wear, The two tyres fitted by Kwikfit were Uniroyal ??? these were fitted on the back around seven months ago, the two tyres on the front were Michelin Synchrones, fitted around three years ago. When they removed the tyres today I compared the tread depth, the depth on the Michelin's was so good I decided to bring them home and keep as spares, there must still be 4/5mm of tread left on them compared to the Uniroyals which had around 3mm left on them. So it pays to get decent tyres in the long run.
 
I'm thinking of fitting these to the 110. Will I need to do any mods? or will they be a straight fit??

I wish I'd known that before shelling out the best part of £700 of four new Michelin Latitude Tour HPs. The Synchrones on mine were 101H (hence the confusion I've expressed) but at 6 years and 44,000 miles old I figured they needed replacing.

15/21 hmmm may be a tad on the big side! 21" off road rims may look cool? 15" wide? May need extended arches and it'd be an 82 profile as its not marked which means its bleeding huge!!!!!

Confused about the tyre pressures, I have been running at 32psi and in less 8k fronts have completely worn the middle tread away! 30psi looks not enough! Have looked through previous threads but no one seems to agree, some running at 38psi??

mine run at 30 psi perfectly well.

try yours with different pressures and drive over a thin layer of sand on a hard surface, to see how much tread is making contact with the ground

I'm running them at 26psi (1.8bar) and they wear evenly.

Tried them at 30 and sure enough the centres wear more than the edges.

But as someone said a while ago I'm probably not cornering fast enough - yeah, that'll be right.

Holy thread revival, but after about 3 hours of the search function this is by far the most relevant thread regarding tyres for the wifes fl.

Thanks to the advice and guidance in here I shall be off to get some Scorpion STR.
