So after this thread....

I took the plunge and bought a re-con turbo from "Nerings" on ebay....
Turbo Turbocharger Land-Rover Freelander 2,0 Td4 (2000- ) 112 Hp | eBay

Have to say...outstanding service. Good communication and delivery speed that puts most other sellers to shame. It was sent on Thursday evening from Latvia and i had it in my hands early on Friday afternoon. Bought a gasket set from them too.

Although removing the old turbo was easy enough, getting the new one on required an assistant to help, as I wiggled it around from underneath, he lay on the engine and fitted the three mounting bolts to the manifold to get it mounted. Everything else was simple enough.

What a difference though! Since buying the car, I always thought it was a bit flat performance-wise. It was ok cruising but lacked low down grunt, requiring being worked quite hard through the gears to get decent acceleration. I just assumed that's the way they are - after all, it's a Land Rover, not a hot hatch. After a Synergy2 set to 10, Pierburg MAF and recon injectors, power was improved but nothing amazing and it started to drop off again of late, especially when pulling a trailer, with plenty of smoke visible too.
With the old turbo off, the VNT system was jammed up solid - it obviously hadn't worked for years. Also, the main shaft seemed a bit tight to turn by hand compared to the replacement.
Now that it is fitted, it is like a different car. Acceleration from lower revs is a smooth surge that holds you back in the seat now, it breezes up the access road to the farm in third gear instead of the plodding second gear slog it used to be, and smoke on hard acceleration is drastically reduced.

So, thats the engine sorted out, having changed pretty much everything that is bolted to it over the last 18 months....just need the IRD to eat itself next for the full Freelander experience!
