I live in South Birmingham near J2 M42 and I bought a Land Rover Discovery last year, it was recommended to me by a mate that the Td5 Discovery Automatic was a reliable piece of kit so I bought an 02 plate one and got maybe 2 months trouble free use out of it. Since then I have had nothing but problems and I am ready to hit it with a hammer. My most recent issue is that it keeps bursting the top radiator hose by , I assume, over-pressuring the system. Everyone says that it is the head gasket which has gone and I'll need to get the head skimmed and replace the gasket, however there is no sign of water in the oil so I have 2 questions. Firstly does anybody know of a decent reliable Land Rover Mechanic near me, and secondly does anybody have any idea what it might be if it isn't the head gasket?

Hi 2 Tall Tim,

When you say burst hose do you mean the hose itself has split? or that it has come away from its fixing point? Where did you get the replacement hose?
Is any water leaking out of the expansion tank cap?

Also, you may want to post in the Discovery section, as it gets more foot traffic.

Welcome to the looneyzone.

Cheers

Hello and welcome to LoonyZone. Are the hoses soft as this can prevent a good solid pressure and seal. First have a water pressure test to confirm issues with leaks. Next is to have the radiator cleared out for blockages as a knackered one can also screw up the water pump that feeds the system flow. Another could be the water pump itself could have failed causing the water boil over.

Cheers guys the hose its self has split (it was fitted by a Garage in Swansea after it happened for the first time and they could find no problem with the head gasket, there doesn't seem to be any leakage from the reservoir and there doesn't seem to be any water in the oil (no emulsification), there is no white or black smoke when the engine is running and having had a thorough check the oil level now seems to be low but I hadn't noticed any leakage of oil previously. I will re-post in the Disco zone and I wish someone had mentioned what a bad habbit Landy's can become before I got one
