hi everyone recently purchased a 2002 freelander s 1.8 petrol off a work mate i bought it cheap as the usual head gasket is starting to fail .
i was lifting the car to remove the skid pan from under the engine when i noticed that the prop shaft wasnt there !!!!! now im totally new to land rovers but im sure there will be a good reason why it will have been removed well i hope so anyway car drives fine but obviously on twd i would like to restore it to 4wd but first wanted to see if anyone can shed any light as to why someone would remove it all mounting points are visable on the car looks like it would simply need a replacement shaft and some new bolts thanks for looking mick

he is no mate - he has, potentially, sold you a very expensive pile of ****

the chances are that not only do you need a new gasket, rail and the other coolant mods, but you will need a new drive train including IRD :(

scrap then ??? shame its in mint condition aswell lol
so realistically the drive train has failed the cost was too high so they removed it i have seen a complete unit for 250 notes but im not sure what else they would have done to the transmision to enable it to run on two wheels instead of four if you ge what i mean t

thanks everyone for the kind welcome i think i have got off to a bad start in the world of land rover buying a freelander being the start of the problems lol i really like them though and there cheap i had another look at the ird end and there is no cover plate mod thing present maybe its simply just a case of new power train wont hold my breath ive priced up a recon one 400 quid plus 250 for power train its adding up i only paid 300 for the car due to gasket failing now it looks like ive been stitched

Welcome to the ship of fools matey! I think many of us have been sold piles of scrap before today - don't beat yourself up about it, that's what wives and girlfriends are for.
You might get £300 scrap for it! Then you can buy a proper Land Rover.
£300 will get you a really crap Discovery 1. Rusty sills, inner wings, boot floor, footwells. Backdoor dropped so much under its own weight that you can't open it and even if you can it will never close, the list of things to fix goes on and on ...
Or you can save up your pennies and a later model (with all the same faults)
Or back to basics and get a Series 3 - or more high-tech and get a Range Rover P38. That way and you will need a Degree in automotive electronics when (not if) it goes wrong.

Not put you off yet have I? :D:D:D

Why not run it, in 2wd till you've sorted it and go from there

Lift up the front wheels and put it in neutral. Now turn the pinion which sticks out the back of the ird. See if you get any funny sounds like a rumble.

update i have put the car on stands and got the mrs to put it in first the pinion is spinning lovely and there is no noise coming from it fromwhat i can hear maybe different under load i dont no i have noticed that the pinion hasnt ben capped off with one of those blanking plates a lot of people seem to fit im a bit reserved about fitting a new prop and bearings just incase the ird is ballsed not really anyway of testing it is there like i say i no that its spinning nicely

looks like the only way you will find out is to get one and try it . Maybe you could borrow one from a fellow freelander sufferer? - just to try.
