Didn't have air on the last Disco, so have a couple of questions - first, sometimes when I get in and start up, I get three chimes, but no warning light, so what is this telling me?
Secondly, sometimes when I switch off, I hear the compressor run, maybe five two second bursts. Is this a case of "they all do that , Sir", or is something amiss?

I don't think it is the compressor, but not sure what it is

Bongs MAY be brake check

That compressor thing is quite common without being normal but happens to many, as long as your battery doesnt get flat learn to live with it, if your's is facelift those bongs are sign that the SLABS ECU has completed the self test and passed(if you leave the ignition on long enough), it can happen on non-facelifts too if the ECU was replaced at one point... IMO These are not issues to worry provided all the waarning lamps are working on ignition self test cos if there are blanked ones the bongs are sign of a fault whie the warning lamp is ''blind'', see attachment and check if all the warnigs for tghe car's spec/equipment are working on ignition

Thanks for replies chaps. Regarding the compressor (or not) sounds, I've haven't been quick enough yet to get out and listen to where it's coming from before it stops. I just assumed it was the compressor as my old five seater didn't do it.

I think all the warning lights are there, but I'll double check them. Is there an instrument test mode you can get into so that all the lights stay on?

Just as sierrafery says, here's a copy from a late model (04) handbook to confirm.
ABS warning
If a fault with the anti-lock braking system is
detected, a warning will chime three times and
the warning light will be illuminated. You may
continue driving, but should understand that
full ABS control may not be available. Consult
your retailer at the earliest opportunity.
Three warnings may also be heard during
engine start-up as part of the ABS system
self-checks. This is normal unless the ABS
warning light stays illuminated after the engine
is running.

Mine does the same it is a d2 face lift, but I must say, I do wait for all the lights and sounds to go out before I start her( I'm a bus driver, and it's something an old engineer told me, let's the all the checks take place before starting).
Must say though I've never herd the compressor running after turning her off.

Made a few checks last night, HDC / TC / ABS lights all come on and then go off, so doesn't seem to be a problem there, probably the self checking routine as suggested.

It's definitely the compressor running, as I managed to get my hand on it while it was doing it. I would have thought topping up the air was something it would do at start up, rather than turn off. I think I'll regard it as a 'feature' for now, as there doesn't seem to be any other problems, e.g. listing to one side or low at the back. I'll keep an eye on it though.

Mine has always (occasional) hissed and buzzed once switched off. It's just "settling down".
I'd be looking into the bongs on start up- that's not normal afaik.
Silly question- do you park on even ground or a slope? Could effect the thought process of a D2 7 seater.

Mine has always "bonged" on start up, normally 3 times, no problem! Not sure that it has anything to do with the compressor?, could be wrong though

No, I wasn't sure if the bongs and the buzz were related, but both were new to me, as is the SLS.

I do park on a bit of a slope as it happens. I'll bear that in mind and see if it does it when I park up on a level surface.

Mine doesn't bong but it's always buzzed!

It doesn't always do it, just sometimes I think.

I assumed it was just levelling itself - possibly for its own amusement!

I've had two Discoveries with air suspension and they both run the compressor for a short period after stopping the car. Doesn't happen every time. For me it happens most when I park at home - probably the turn into the drive and over the kerbs probably does something to system and it then tries to self level.
Cheers!

Hi, Re the "bongs" when I fist start mine from cold I always wait for the glow plug light to go out and it always bongs 3 times. When warm, and I start straight away, it doesn't bong. I believe it's part of the self test.
HTH,
Griff
