Had problems with my p38 as well documented on here. Woife took the car out Friday and got an emergency call. "its overheeated". Having warned her to shut her down in this case she did the right thing so no damage to engine.
I expected the worse but doing a check yesterday the thermostat was not opening forcing her to get mega hot and hoping the new rad is ok.
Hot pipes at the top of the thermostat , hot pipe at the top of the rad, hot half way down the rad and cold at the outlet pipe out the rad at the bottom and at the bottom of the thermostat.
This smacks of a failed NEW thermostat. Anyone else had this problem and am I right in my diagnotics.

Sounds as though you are correct. It is not unknow but pretty rare.

I've taken it off and poured boiling water over the top. It opens with boiling water. I've put it all basck together again and have the same problem. Cars up to temp ie needle in middle but the rad is cold at the bottom and the bottom of the thermostat is also cold. Hot pipes at the top side of the thermnostat and the top hose is hot. filled the rad first with coolant and filled engine with the top hose taken off to eliminate air loicks. GRRRRR

No exactly sure if its possible to install the stat the wrong way around, but if so this would stop it working, also has the stat got a small hole through the main outer housing, if not drill one in it about 3/16" this will allow hot water to get to other side of stat so it responds quicker.

Other than that, maybe impeller is not doing its job or blockage/air lock somewhere perhaps.

Just taken out for as run after filling up and running on idle on the drive. Ok at the filling station and ok passing my home back then 200 hyards out the village it goes over to red again. Again hot top hose and cold bottom outlet and red hot the other side of the thermostat.
Now I'm getting angry as it must be the thermostat.

Run the vehicle without the thermostat and see what you get if it still gets hot you have a bigger problem. If it runs cool fit another new stat.
