Hi All , I bought new rear lights for my Defender 300tdi . They differ from the originals in that they're one piece and regular bulbs won't fit properly . They're tight to put in and won't twist round . Only the tail lights work , no brake lights . Bulbs , fuse , and brake light switch are good . Do I need different bulbs or are the holders faulty ?

I know now't about defenders but are you saying you have replaced separate stop and tail lamps for a single combined unit?
In which case have you moved the wire from the old stop lamp to the new combined one?
Have you put a combined stop/tail bulb in the new unit?

So the light you show above are for a Series landrover not a Defender. There are some slight differences and I guess this is what you are refering to as them being 1 piece.
Like below ....
Both of these are single fillament bulb holders, the dual fillament have three wires/connections. Red, Green and Black. Black is earth.
To test the bulb and holder you need a 12V battery (I use an old motorcycle battery) and some wire with small clips - it's a really usefull addition to finding electrical problems. I would reccomend an inline fuse on the positive side too especially when searching for 'problems'.
Anyway back to your question.
The orange indicator bulb holder (above) won't fit into the hole that is designed for the lower (sidelight) holder.
The top indicator holder screws onto the wing/panel which also forms a part of the earth and then the orange/clear/red lens screws onto the base.
The lower holder screws into the wing/rear panel and is attached/glued to the lens.
Here is a pic of my 'Fokker', you can see the different sized holes as the Fokker has a Series wing and a Defender wing ...

Backinblack , no , just a straight swop for a new combined stop/tail light with the same three wires , red , green , and black .
Miktdish , I replaced the stop/tail lights not the indicators . The replacement lights were advertised as Defender/Series .. and have two spring loaded "button" connections in the holder .

I know, my point was showing the 'style' of lamp/lens holder ... the only difference is that the bulb has 2 + connections which are connected to 2 of the 3 wires (Red and Green) and the Black wire is earth.
There were some (early) 200tdi defenders that used the same series lenses, but your 300tdi (if it is original) used the later style bulb holders (ie the indicator lens in my pic above).
A side light indicatr bulb only has 1 fillament, the brake/stop bulb has 2.

Have you tried to take the bulb out but keep its position then rotate 180 and put it back in, Might sound basic but
They will go in and just latch on 1 pin if in the wrong orientation so only 1 filament works dont ask how I know.

Marjon , yes , I have done that and both filaments light up together . There are the usual two connecting points on the bulb and two connecting points in the bottom of the holder . I'm beginning to think that no-one is familiar with this type of holder .

They must earth through the bulb holder itself, one filament does 'stop' light, the other 'tail' light, but on your original the feeds would be separate , did your original have twin filament bulbs or separate units ?

For twin filament one of the 'keyways' is offset, usually by height, have you tried a normal single filament bulb in ?

Maybe incorrect bulb holders fitted to units ...
Keyway is offset by height . Can't see the point of sticking a single in , I need brake lights .

To test if the bulb holders are indeed incorrect ...
Definitely something dodgy about the holder . Bulb should not be tight to push in and should turn . Also very difficult to pull out again . Maybe the fact that the units came without bulbs says something , because I got similar style indicators from another supplier and they came fitted with bulbs .

As you say if the keyway is offset by height the bulb will only go in one way. I don't think the single filament bulb is offset so would go in but not turn.
Perhaps a picture of the light internals and bulb will help someone spot the issue.
