Yesterday I was trying to replace the steering box drop arm on my dads 90. The only way I could get it off was to cut it as it wouldn't budge. Working in poor light and steamed up googles I cut in too deep and have taken some notches out of the spline which hangs out the bottom of the box. I'd say there maybe 1/4 of the way through.

Although its removed some of the splines the new drop arm still fitted on fine. And I think there's enough splines left (about 3/4) to hold the new arm firm. Would it be safer to get a new steering box or should it be fine like this?

how do you get a 1/4 of the way through , it will probably be okay but if it doesnt you will be in the **** ,its not worth the risk

it was cold, dark and I was angry! I kept grinding a bit then checking but couldn't tell i was in enough until I was in too deep! The 90 is very rarely used on the road but if it seems it will be an issue I'd rather just change it.

seeing as you have damaged it rather than change the box,get a couple of weld tac's put on it lots of water and that way its not going anywhere box seals should be alright .

it would be most likely ok to use ,the only issue would be if it was inspected after a failure and serious crash etc but what are the chances of that ?
