New starter wanted. Where to buy? Or shall I get it professionally reconditioned?

I was going to get it from bearmach but £120 seems to be a little pricey.

eBay seems to have a few for around £70. It's an aapoldham starter. Is that a good/bad brand?

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

The other option is to send it off to have someone test and replace any parts that need fixing. I took it apart myself, cleaned it up and checked the brushes but that's the limit of my ability.

Bearmach seems to sell almost any part that you would need to recondition it if I can find someone to do it.

IMHO, DIY is always better - you learn something and you know exactly what has been done, AND what has NOT been done ;) . The fact that it is usually cheaper is also a bonus :).

There are times when DIY isn't practical, or the "thing" is beyond sensible repair, at which point I use this lot:-

Nice, I may be tempted to give it another go actually. I'll have to do some more research.

The last time I had it apart I did notice a few loose bearings that I forgot about. Any idea what these would be from? Does the drive pinion have bearings in it? Maybe that's what needs replacing.

For slow turning I would change the brush holder assembley, clean the commutator (emery cloth in a strip) and clean and grease all the bearings. Don't remove the windings, they are very unlikely to be the problem. changeing the brush holder / end cap is fiddly compared to just changing the brushes but it solves more problems.

Post some piccies up if you can ;) - worth a thousand words :)
I've just attached two photos. It doesn't really show a lot. I'll take it off the LR this eve and take a few more photos of the brushes and other components.

Do you know which of the components use bearings? I did notice a loose bearing inside the casing last time I had it apart. Everything seemed to rotate smoothly but its probably worth me replacing anything that uses bearings.

Here's a video of the starter turning over before fitting:

The correct way to test it is to attach that jump lead positive clip to the solenoid posiitve stud then using a piece of wire, short out the pos temrinal to the solenoid trigger terminal, tnat way you test the whole thing incl the soldoing contacts (which could be your issue) and not just the motor as you are doing, BUT do stand on the starter whilst doing it as they like to jump about!

Ive had a few 200 ones apart and whilst the britpart one works its pretty poorly made inside, the bosch one was top notch quality inside, saying that the bosch one got dunked one to many times and got binned whilst the britpart one is still on the car to this day.
