New rear cross member advice please

Hi just after the best advice for putting new. Rear cross member on the 90 is it best to lift the tub up or is their an easier option to cut the chassis at the top to slide the new one on to the chassis
 
What one did you get? As clive said its best to use the tub to line it up otherwise its going to be all over the place...
 
What PB says. You use the tub to locate and hold (they are heavy) the xmember in the right place before welding up. Dont try to do it by measuring etc or you'll never get it right. I took the tub floor out so PB could weld the top of the chassis rails easily.
 
Its not meant to but by carefully drilling out the rivets and spot welds it will lift out.
Makes things so much easier on a whole host of jobs.

To refit either use self tappers or pop rivets. I have a piece of 5mm ally diamond plate which will replace the existing floor panel when the weather warms up and I get round to it.
 
When I did the 90's cross member with extensions. I lifted the tub at the rear. cut the old cross member out, slotted the noo one in and lowered the tub. Bolted it to the crossmember. Then tacked the crossmember in place. Then lifted the tub out of the way again, so I could weld all of the crossmember.
 
They are really easy to do on a 90 as there no fuel tank to remove and there enough height over the chassis rails not to have to move a thing and Ive done a few
 
Did one on my 110 last year, with extensions, left the tub in place, pulled the loom back and stripped everything off the chassis rails then cut straight through with a repro saw! Tidied it up after, then used the tub to support the weight and aid with lining it up while Welding it up.

agreed

no floor out or anything......just cut it off with a reciprocating saw and fit the new one over the chassis rails..weld it up,loads of room in there...

just remember there is a wire loom to sort so dont cut that .
