Hi guys,

I've just bought a 1987 3.5 EFI and I'm hoping it's not to bad a purchase. Couple of question though if I may; When I change gear (automatic) it gives quite a 'knock' when it engages, is this pointing to anything major? Also the red battery light remains on all the time - I'm guessing this will be the alternator that needs changing. Could it be anything else?

Cheers

Hello & welcome to the madhouse... firstly you cannot have a 3.5 1987 EFI... ALL the 3.5 were Carbs & in 89/90 LR changed the "Engine" to a 3.9 EFI (of course it could have had a "transplant" ... a 3.9 EFI from a 1990 or above model)

The Red light is Deffo yer Alternator ..& the "Knock" will probs be a UJ on the propshafts

Ok I had a mooch into my books & I'M WRONG!!!............Carbs on rangies ceased in 1986 & there were a few 3.5's fitted with the Lucas Fuel Injection system in 87 & 88 before LR bored out the 3.5 to make the 3.9 in 89/90

There CANNOT be many 3.5 EFI's left knockin about these days !!!.................. GOOD FIND there Matey!!!

Ive got one and she must be one of the last as she is 1989

O.K. so 3.5 on flapper is what you've got, yes it is an EFI so that's that bit.

Red battery light on all the time says your alternator is in trouble. Take it off take it to a local auto electrician and get them to overhaul it - new brushes, slip rings, voltage regulator, diode pack and bearings. That should sort it unless there is an internal fault on the rotor or something.

Clonks, clunks and general noises from transmission are not uncommon. Check both prop shafts - all the universal joints for play, make sure the sliding joints are free, check the transmission for ATF, check the transfer box levels too. Check front and rear diffs for oil level and adjust as necessary.

The other thing that can cause clonks and bangs is the rear A frame ball joint, best give that a good pull about too.

That little lot should keep you occupied for a bit, let us know how you get on.

You are getting there! The 3.5efi was introduced in October '85 (in Vogue spec only) for the '86 model year (I had one from that month) also the carb. version of the engine could still be specified until (I believe) '87. Yes there are 3.5efi's about, I sold an '89 earlier this year & still own a really nice '87 Vogue now. I think they are the best of the bunch, smooth running, uncomplicated electrics & little chance of liner problems.
