Went to look at a 110 van today, and yes ended up buying it. No plans to sell my 90 but just wanted to see if the 110 would be more useful with a bit more space for kids bikes kayaks etc.

Anyhow, by a strange twist of fate the 110 is a 1994 300tdi and used to belong to the local highway authority, exactly the same age and type as my 90, which also belonged to the government, they were probably purchased in the same batch.

I'll probably be back on here a bit more often whilst the project is on the go. So far it needs a new rear cross member and drivers bulkhead floor repair most of the rest is normal defender wear and tear.

The only thing that's new to me is the Salisbury axle, which badly needs a o/s wheel bearing. Are they much the same at the 90 rear axle with regard to wheel bearing changing or is there anything different? I realise the diff assembly is different. Also the rear prob UJs are shot, I have some spares from my 90 if they are the same size. It's had bucket seats fitted at some point, which I was initially going to bin off, but they are actually quite comfy.

Not had a proper poke about yet, but looking forward to doing it up.

Ok, picked up the 110 today, and drove it to my folks, as it will fit in their garage. And I was scared witless or similar sounding word.

The wheel bearing on the back was totalled, and there is so much play in something at the front, I was fighting it round every left hand bend. Right handlers were OK, but then if you got up a where near 30mph it started tank slapping. On the positive, I haven't found anything more wrong than I originally spotted, and there are a few parts with it I didn't see at first. The back is carpeted on the sides and roof, and the doors are not as bad as I first thought.

All in all I'm excited to get it sorted.

This was the photo from the advert. I meant to take one next to mine but was running out of time, so headed home.

That's a rather dirty photo to put in one's advert! Oh well, it doesn't seem to have put you off.
My parts list (which itself has a part number STC9021CC) lists the hub bearings as STC4382 pretty much across the board. Except where it's RTC3429 which it says is NLA (no longer available) so use STC4382 instead. Stub axles, on the other hand come in quite a variety for different models.

Anyway, looks like you've got an interesting project there. Looking forward to seeing more of it as you work on it.

Is £1400 a good price for a 110 300tdi with Scary Steering? I don't know, but looking forward to fixing it up, it's up my folks and my dad was allegedly washing it this morning, I'll try and get up in the week. And check the rear prop UJ size, the prop is clacking like a mad thing, typically I have a spare pair for my 90 ready to go, but the 110 rear is obviously longer. The motor looks like it's been in an oily bog, there is a new rocker gasket in the spares box, which will hopefully fix it, but I'll have to steam clean the engine bay, before I can bring myself to touch it.

someone's bought goodies to make it offroady.. :)

have a good check of the chassis for the usual rust and bangs.

rear bearing shouldn't worry you if you've done your 90

if your 90 is also a 300 then i think the ujs are the same. still not a huge job to do

front wobble.. two peeps, one turns and the other looks for play. i vote for the balljoints, esp the droparm :D

Yes, mine is a 300 tdi too, it's the same age same model and the original number plates on both are very close. So I guess they were registered at a similar time.

Chassis seems good except the rear X member, can anybody recommend a good replacement rear X member? We are over in England next week so could collect! I guess Pressbrake is still retired?

The body is good except drivers floor, and a little bubbling in the centre of the bulkhead. I actually have a full set of new track rod ends I was given by a friend so they can go on if required.

Land Rover engines seem to be quite happy to be pressure washed in my experience, which gets a lot of the congealed oil and road dirt mixture off them so you can see what you're doing. The fins in the radiator are a little tender and can be bent even with a vigorous garden hose. But everything else can be washed down with gusto. Same goes for the interior as well.

Sounds like a good bargain. If all it needs is a new crossmember and a few bearings, that's a decent amount of four wheel drive fun for the money. I'd be wiling to bet that 90% of the poor handling will resolve itself if you replace your ball joints, steering swivel bearings and wheel bearings on the front.

Popped past the folks yesterday, but couldn't stay too long. Dad likes doing bodywork, where as I much prefer mechanics. He has stripped the checker plate off, and the only real problem is the rear offside corner has had a crunch, but it's fixable, at the worse I'll put the cut down checker plate back on the bottom. The back door is pretty good, and just needs a little bit of welding to the bottom box section.

The rear OS wheel bearing is absolutely toast. There must be literally nothing left of the bearing, it's just jacked up at the mo, but hopefully when I strip it down, there will be something left of the bearing race to take off and replace.

The drop arm ball joint is goosed also, but the rest look ok. So hopefully a few bushes and we are sorted. The rear prop joint is also shafted, again will get a new one sorted and put in.

I have been in touch with Pressbrake about a crossmember. The folks are away to the big smoke soon, so will pick it up for me, postage to the Isle of Man, is probably going to cost more than the beer money I will owe dad.

More work hopefully Thursday evening!

I have been working on the 110 from 4.30 to 10 pm. And as expected the o/s wheel bearing is absolutely goosed.
The smell of burnt grease when I took it apart was overpowering. The big bearing hex nuts had to be wound off the stub with a breaker bar, as the end of the thread was damaged. And the only way I could get the hub off was to pack the drive flange out with a big nut and wind the hub bolts in to pull the hub off.

The inner bearing was a slimy pile of broken metal swarf and black grease, the outer was dry and had burnt grease on it. The stub axle is grooved in the middle at least half way through the thickness of the tube, and the inner seal is worn away, the inside of the brake disk is also scored more than half way through. So all together I need, a stub axle, pair of disks, a new wheel bearing and possibly a new hub.

I checked the passenger side bearings, and they came off ok, and looked salvageable, but when I took the outer bearing out, there was loads of grease on the outside edge of the bearing but none actually in the bearing itself, it was dry, the inner seal was damaged and had let water in, but most of it cleaned up with we and dry, and then a thorough proper greasing of bearings and back together, sounding altogether better.

By this time it was 9.30pm so I quickly took off the back prop and headed home with it at 10pm ready to replace the rear UJ over the weekend.

Ok, progress so far.

Rear prop repaired with the worlds most expensive UJ bought locally for £37.00. Anyway it works and can go back on. Will make up a Paddock order next time, even with £16 postage it would have been cheaper.

Rear cross member ordered from Black Sheep off road :D and big order of essentials from Paddock to replace stuff like this
image.jpeg

Yep, absolutely chuffed. So new stub and hub ordered, as well as new disks, and other sundries.

Not really much needed mechanically to be fair, but nothing that couldn't have been avoided had the PO's not driven it it round with a collapsed rear wheel bearing for a good few miles.

When the bits arrive later in the week, I'll try and get some better photos of the progress.

Excellent, parts arrived today, picked them up from my folks shop, at lunch time. No rear exhaust though as it's coming separately. Left to go back to work and a phone call from my nephew 10 mins later, yes you guessed it exhaust arrived. Oh well can't get up to the folks house until Thursday night now, so will pick it up on the way.

The front chassis outrigger seems sturdy, have Land Rover parts got better recently?

Hub and disks ready to fit along with new stub axle. Looking forward to getting some of the mechanicals sorted and then I can sort some of the body and interior out.

I'll try and get photos, if it's not too manky.

Managed to get the damaged hub rebuilt with a new stub axle, hub and wheel bearing, here's the old disk with the groove worn in it!

Here's the hub, all chewed up. Just no point in risking it.

New disk and hub just waiting for the bearings.

Now just need to do the other disk, and replace the seal too.

It's getting there, just had news that the Pressbrake rear cross member has turned up at my aunts. My folks are picking it up to bring it home with them next week. There's a bit of bulkhead welding to do and I'll be most of the way there.

Hello.

I have literally done nothing for at least two weeks. Been away on holiday to Scotland. Dad has removed (hacked off) the rear X member and cleaned up what he could, not sure when I will get up to do welding, as I have a busy few weeks at work coming up.

My biggest dilemma is what seats to put in. It came with some sort of reasonable recliners, but the runners are missing and the seats were not even bolted in.

I've missed a couple of sets of standard seats on Ebay mostly due to trying to sort out carriage. And no one local appears to have any. So I'm starting to look for alternatives.
