Hi all,

Well today I pick up a '02 Freelander TD4. After 3 years of driving a 406 Coupe V6 I know it's going to be a big change but now that my son is doing more and more DH riding, and I also have a burger trailer to tow, the Coupe was in no way suitable.

So, any advice on Freelander ownership / maintenance would be much appreciated. I do like to get my hands dirty so most things are in my scope.

One thing I would like to get is the front light pod / nudge bar ?? that I have seen on a few of them -

Any suggestions on where to get these would be much appreciated. I have had a look on ebay and cant find a thing !

Hi, and :welcome2:

For lights, bars, wheels, and any other bits check the for sale & wanted section on here.

As for getting your hands dirty - you're in luck now mate. Get yourself a good hand-cleaner before you go much further. A Haynes W-shop Manual would be a good idea as well.

Read up the threads and stickies on here about the following items - don't worry if you don't know what they are yet - you will soon! :)

VCU - check.
EGR - clean, disconnect or preferably throw away and fit a bypass.
pcv - change to the latest BMW upgraded part.
tyres - check that the ones with most tread depth are on the rear.

That's enough to get you going.

Enjoy your new wheels. :D

You'll also learn to ignore the jealous numpties on here whose advice / answer to everything is either burn it, or beat it to death with a hammer / screw-driver / axe / anything else that comes to hand!

Regards, Singvogel.

Congratulations on your new car mate, its looks stunning!
Some nice mods and its an awesome colour!

Sorry for the hi-jack comment, but are Singvogel's comments applicable to a 99 model as well?

Freelander changed the design of the freelander 1 in 2003/4 to include a facelift front and rear bumper with smarter looking headlights too. They are both still a freelander 1 but with new shaped bumpers and lights, im afraid the bars wont fit yours if it states 2004-2007.

Joe's right - the front (and rear) bits are not interchangeable between the original and the 'facelift' Freelander 1s.

As for my little list of things to check the VCU and tyre comments would apply to all FLs.

The EGR and pcv was aimed at the BMW M47R engined beasts.

Regards, S.

And how do I know if I have one of these ?

Hi,

That's easy - here's a pic. :D

Land Rover Freelander Engine Pictures | Auto Express

Double check - for the doubters amongst us - take out the yellow handled dip-stick - taking care not to drip 5W-30 on your shiny new boots - and have a look at what is moulded in the plastic - guess what? - BMW.

Sorry about my first pic - the lap-top went nuts for some reason.

Regards, S.
