New Owner - and a few questions.

Hi all, newbie here. Bought myself a Disco 2 (1999 2.5 TDi TD5)-today, and I have a few questions.

1 - The headlights are pathetic, they look newish, no signs of fading on the glass at all. They are just not very bright.

2 - The screen wash bottle has a broken neck, are they easy to replace.

3 - I only have one key, does the key have anything to do with the immobiliser? My old VW Passats key had a chip built in, and without it you could not start the engine.

Other than that, I am very pleased with her.

1. They aren't HID, so if you are used to that they will seem dimmer.

2. It's a bumper-off job on my facelift, assume it's the same on a pre-facelift. Time consuming, but not hard

3. Yes, the key fob has a chip in it for the immobiliser. You can get replacements (the Rover 75 is the same, and cheaper than one with Land Rover on it) but it will need programming in to the BCU using a Nanocom Evo

Thanks for the reply, I'll have a go at the screenwash bottle. I used to drive an S reg VW Passat before the Disco, and the lights were far superior, I might think about upgrading them, I do a lot of driving in the night hours or very early morning.

The handbrake is also not very good, it has to come to an angle of about 65' before it holds, I have been searching to find out how to adjust it, but all I can find is adjustments for Disco's with rear drums, I have disks on mine, how do you adjust them? I have a RAVE cd, but I am must be looking in the wrong place, because I can't find a thing on it.

Before you start down the rocky road of trying to "upgrade" the headlights you should try replacement bulbs.
Older headlight bulbs can degrade with age; many motoring organisations recommend replacement every two to three years. Many members would recommend using ones such as Osram +120% Nightbreakers.
You could also research additional driving lights.

The handbrake on most Land Rovers; Defenders, Series, and at least the Disco 2 use a transmission brake which operates on the rear prop shaft just at the rear of the transfer box.

As far as your copy of RAVE is concerned, please check that it's the correct version. Mine is for the Disco2 and the Freelander 1. I've attached details from RAVE on adjusting the handbrake.

Thanks for that, I found it and had a go at adjusting it, seems better already, I mistook the transfer box in the picture for a drum brake.:doh: I will take your advice and change the bulbs first, before I go any further. I think we have the same copy of RAVE.

The drum handbrake is on the back of the transfer box, Disco 1 and 2, Defender and all Series Landies.

I have used osram night breakers and they are fab. My transit went from yellow dim lights to bright white with a longer beam.
