I currently own a 2014 defender with low milage and would like to keep it that way.

But due to resent career change need to tow a car trailer about 800 miles a week I'm thinking of a disco 2 td5
Or disco v8 petrol with a lpg conversion.

As the vehicle will spend 90% of its life with a trailer on dose anybody know if the LPG option will work out cheaper to run or should I stick with a low milage td5.

Thanks in advance
Matt

No idea about lpg, but my V8 disco does pretty good mileage on petrol when towing.
If you are going to buy an older vehicle for towing, Maybe an idea to go auto, old tired clutches don't usually survive heavy towing for long.

Towed a twin axle, box body trailer with tail lift, total weight 2.5 tones loaded for ten years (15/20k miles a year) with disco td5 manual and averaged 20/22 mpg when towing and 30/32 mpg when not.
Had both sprung and self levelling air suspension models and definitely preferred the slf air suspension as this gave a better ride and handling when towing.
Now no longer towing, have an automatic disco td5 and only get 25/26 mpg even on long motorway runs so would advise against using an automatic for towing on economic grounds.

Get about 18-20 mpg out of my V8 Auto towing a cattle trailer. Worth every penny, cattle are heavy, and the autobox sorts it all out, no slamming up and down the gears on hills.
Also lovely for manouevering in tight farmyards.

Thanks Roy interesting you mention the air suspension so you think the td5 manual would be the way to go on air

The combination worked well for me towing all over north and mid wales and the M6, comfortably at 50+ on ordinary roads and 70 on the motorway without problems.
I feel that the disco 2 td5 auto _(70k) I now drive whitest an easy lazy drive is just not as responsive as the manuals I used for towing.
