Driving along yesterday, all of a sudden I hear a noise just like a flat tire.
Psssshhhhhh....... from the right side.
I pull over ready to change a tire but the noise is gone and all the tires are fine. I roll forward a couple feet and... nothing.

I drive for the rest of the day and no more noise.

This afternoon I take her up the road and after about 15 minutes I get the same sound. But this time it sounds a little bit more metallic. It really sounds like the front right tire.
So I go back and put her on the jack, lift her a bit and check for looseness in the wheel and the propshafts. Everything seems fine. I check all the brake disks to see iff maybe a rock is stuck but dont see anything,.,.,.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Similar prob, though mine sounds like a stone in the tyre tread, passed MOT with comment, but now started to make noise when steering at near lock, as James mentioned, also just noted oil seep from hub rubber cap.
Have already got new bearing kits that include seals for around £12 + VAT so worth sorting.
:)

is it worse when cornering ? it should make a poor wheel bearing more noisy ,

When I turn one way it goes away, when I turn the other it comes back, Not any louder, I dont think.

If it is a wheel bearing will it get me home, I will have to do about 15-20 miles?

Generally if it gets worse when tuning left then it is the right wheel bearing and vice-verse as the weight of the vehicle is thrown outward and loads the bearing more.

****ing rain here at the moment.
I will check all 4 wheels in the morning for movement.
I dont leave here till Monday evening. Its about 12 miles to the ferry boat, then when I get back to Nassau about 5 miles to get home.

I think I have a couple spare wheel bearings at home.

If I do find play in a wheel I think I will try find a wrecker to carry her to the boat.

Thanks.

Defender wheel bearings have got to be totally fkuced before they vor the car!
My fronts are just about dead and the rears arent far behind.

I did jack it hence the reason I know they are nearly dead:D
New ones collected ready to fit, even treated it to a new stub axle, assuming Ive actually bought the correct one!
You know they say never buy a car from a mechanic? well guess what I do for a living;)

Just finished checking all 4 wheels, all is solid.
So I think I will give it a try tomorrow, take my time.
15 miles should be ok?

AND on the last wheel check the Hi Lift fell over!
Snapped the pretty plastic base thingy.
Gonna get a chunk of wood instead.

Timken are a good make.
Might be solid to feel but you need to spin them and with an ear near the hub listen for any rumbling.

My main worry now is that she will make it the 15 miles to the Ferry Boat to carry me back to Nassau, then another 5-6 miles to my house.

What say ye?
