landy went in today for mot, failed on ,,3 dust covers..blimey...ball joint covers and anti roll bar rubber...while it was undergoing this drastic repair i had air con serviced, now its ice cold, what surprised me was that i remarked at least mot is not up till 12th April so loads time to do repairs...little bit banter..only to be told..no...under new mot guidelines..when it fails..it invalidated the previous mot, so if you take it in month early as i norm do and it fails..data base shows...a failed mot.
weve lost that crucial month to get repairs done, in fact a guy in there was shocked as his had failed and needed the car for work 20 mile away...untill he can book it in for repair..nope..you can drive home ..and back for retest..,end off
rang up 2 other mot places who confirmed.
only way around it is to have a pre mot check as such.
mine now as new mot no advisories
 
There is logic in that. . say a vehicle unsafe but for small items etc it is a pain to find yourself out of that window to rectify.
Maybe a progressive path to how the Japan home market is .. They don't want old vehicles on the road.
 
well when i knew mine had failed..it has to go on system as a failure, so i checked my on....check my mot history /gov site and sure enough it stated...failed mot and no valid one showing
 
The tested has always had the power to stop you from driving away if your car was dangerous. when I used to help my mate who had an MOT station he had a 205 GTI in and the brake pipe was just a bout worn through he filled in a form and guy had two options, get my mate to fix it or get a garage to trailer it away to be fixed.
this is typical rip of car drivers stuff

they always had that option ..but now law says even if like mine..3 rubber protector covers for ball joints...caused it to fail..i would have had no car over easter had the garage not got these put on...what if i was towing a van on hols...holiday ruined..for what...3 covers...not brakes, steering, tyres, corrosion...6 quid they cost...ridiculous and not needed
 
It's to bring us in line with the rest of Europe I believe. For safety critical failures, this has always been the case anyway.

I agree, if there is no play in the joints totally over the top ridiculous fail. A split rubber cover in no way renders a vehicle dangerous to drive. As far as i am aware MOT stations have no authority to impound a vehicle. Any vehicle that fails can be removed for repair. A untaxed vehicle, providing it is insured can be driven to a pre arranged test venue, if it fails it can be driven elsewhere for repair.

no ones on about impounding....its about if you fail but still have month left on old mot new law says the failure invalidates old mot...so you may drive home ..if not dangerous...and back to a pre booked mot...thats it

If you take a car in a month early and it fails then you lose a month. If it's deemed unfit on the day of test it is unfit. Simples. It's not rocket science. Don't take it early and spend the time making sure it will pass.

but in my case 3 ball joint rubbers...does that make car unfit..clearly i had done my own tests has it passed on everything else
 
It's just another tax on the motorist, that's all. Like anything new, well get used to it and continue to pay up.
The MOT tester has always been able to cancel a valid MOT certificate if he deemed the vehicle unsafe to drive.
This new rule just means that a failure, no matter how trivial, now does the same thing automatically.
As Wammers said. Make sure you check everything carefully and don't take it in too early;)

or ask for a pre test first so if for example you need to order a part thats not readily available you have rest of mot thats valid

Evening fella, If you check the gov.co.uk website I dont think this is correct. This was stated a few weeks back, but has been clarified. things are still as they were - you can drive a car away from a failed MOT if you still have ticket left, but if you are caught with an un-roadworthy you will be prosecuted. Which is as it always has been. if you are caught with an un-roadworthy ticket six months after the MOT you will still be done even if it passed on at the time.

Yep, nothing has changed with the MOT rules, just the automatic cancellation of the certificate has been added. When it was a hand written certificate, obviously it was open to misuse where a vehicle that had been failed, could still be driven on the previous cert. They've simply closed that little loophole.

i read that ..it says you can take car away...but if you read further guidelines it means ..back home...not to use every day as legally it has no mot, you can then drive back to the pre booked mot,...3 mot stations have said to clarify this for there customers they rang vosa...who stated a failed mot ...means just that

Not in my opinion, if the joints are otherwise sound no it doesn't. But the dickheads at VOSA say it does. Totally bloody ridiculous but sadly i don't make the rules.
