Hi all. New member but got a bit of a project on my hands. Recently acquired 2x series 3’s (one spare bits and one will be the basis of my project) this will be a longish project and having worked on 90’s, 110’s etc wanted to put my hand to something older. The project will be the pickup variant series 3. Got my basic shopping list, sort chassis (couple of small welding jobs), parabolic suspension, disc conversion, 200tdi engine swap (as this seems to be a popular swap) but I’m wondering if anyone has come across or even done a bed mounted fuel tank, rather than the under seat which my doner chassis comes with. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome!

Let us know how you get on. It would be worth considering keeping the original engine as originality helps keep the value. The two and a quarter petrol can be made noticeably quicker and better with the ACR performance upgrade if you aren’t bothered by the economy, although the 200Tdi is a good engine.

Let us know how you get on and don’t forget some pics too.

So the pic below is lightweight number 2. Most of the body and bulkheads on this are in good nick (some minor welding and new foot wells seem to be about it) so this is getting putting on the s3 chassis in my profile pic. The 2-1/4 in the pick up isn’t a runner at present. But I’ll run it for a while and see what it’s like. But seen lots of posts about swapping to the 200tdi. But as in my intro message this is a project so will be a lot of restoration works to be done before I move on to engines and overall “shiny” bits on it. Thanks for the info though
