Hi guys and thanks for any assitance you may be able to offer from the start....:)

I have just returned from purchasing a 1995 4.6 HSE in York, driven it back to home in Barrow In Furness. It is running on LPG and I negotiated the price down a bit for a couple of small problems/faults that I thought may be user fixable.

I am a pretty competent mechanic as I run a 1977 Triumph Spitifre as my daily driver during the summer and it does 500 - 600 miles a week - Yes I know a slightly smaller engine.

Right back to my new baby. The car has run back fine, but has the following problems - the key fob does not operate the central locking - despite changing out the batteries - discounted accordingly. The drivers door mirror will move in the up down plane but will not move in or out and the passenger mirror sticks in the down position after auto moving when in reverse.

The car has been coverted to springs and has a sequential multi point lpg system with 110ltr tank (which I am thinking of augumenting with a donought tank in the wheel well as I do 180 miles a day). Any pointers to a good non dealer specialist in the cumbria area would also be appreciated.

Regards

Hmmmmm,

180 miles a day in a RR.

Fook the environment!

I do 18 miles a day in mine and whince each time I fill up, which is too often.

Thats why I bought LPG - but hey you got to go where the work is and since a big 4x4 saved my life three weeks ago - I thought I had better have a replacement with the insurance money after my shogun lost the argument after a hgv decided to run me off the road - hence the rangie.

Personally I'm not a fan of lpg so can't help you on that one. However I am currently having a similar prob with the keys. (See the thread key 1, key 2 for advice).

The other thing is the mirrors - I take it you don't have your handbook. There is a section in there about the mirrors. Basically if yours only work in certain directions you could have mirror motor or switch pack probs. Easiest way to deal is to adjust what you can by the switch then manually click them into position and set them in the memory i.e. holding down the memory button press mem 1 until it beeps the repeat for mem 2 button (on the side of the driver's seat). To cancel the reverse dip (which I find is a pain anyway) leave the engine off, turn the ignition on but don't start the engine, have the mirrors set in your fave position, put the car in reverse then hold down the seat memory button itself for a few seconds until it beeps and the message reads 'mirror dip off'. Try that.

the mirror dip is an abosolute waste of space, get yerself a rear parking sensor jobby, ive got one, it works a treat, and on the odd occaision you need to see lower when reversing wind the window down.

put the key in the door and turn whilst pressing lock, to the lock position same for unlock. the official detail is if the car recieves a lock/unlock request and key movement within 30 secs it will resync.

for lpg you can add another tank, just follow the same method as is already installed. there should be valves on the tanks to isolate em and save you emptying em before modding the system.

just use normal 6 or 8mm fittings from diy store and same size pipe. i would go for a large cylinder in the boot, placed against the rear seats and anchored down you will still have useable space in the boot!

Thanks Hippo for the mirror advice - your right no handbook - sourcing one at the moment. Thanks gavbriggs I was going to look at a parking sensor set up - which one did you get. I already have the large tank in the boot space - I was going to expand with the donought in the wheel well as I am not to worried about straping the spare to the side of the boot internally. I may get a fitter to do it as the current gauge is playing up at the moment and could aslo do with fixing at the same time.

the guages always lie but you will find that over time you will know when to fill up, just keep a bit of petrol in there!

i have two cylinders in wheel space, 110 litres, no loss of boot but no spare either!

the sensor was on the car when i got it, its just a cheapo thing but works very well

The passenger side mirror not returning after dipping seems to be a fairly common problem for which I've not heard any sensible solutions.

I use my dipping mirrors quite a bit (especially the passenger side one to check for kerbs (and the wife's flower beds etc), but a lot of people don't like them. They're quite useful offroad too.

I think it's probably a dodgy connection somewhere as mine works perfectly sometimes, dips but doesn't return at other times and occasionally does nothing at all. The drivers side one works fine.

As for your drivers mirror not moving in one plane, I've not had one apart, but I imagine there's a motor for each plane of movement - bad connection again, would be my guess. I would doubt that it's the switch pack if the passenger one moves freely, but you never know.

Just my 2 pence worth.

Guy

Thanks Guy I think I can live with the passenger mirror dip - but the drivers side one may need to change if the wife cant get a decent view (not that she will be driving it much if I have my way). I will try and sort a parking sensor of eblag.

Gav silly question - does the led light on the fob when pressed - mine is doing nothing. I am not locked out and the car starts on the key with no error messages except the sunroof needing setting - so I am assuming the quick resync of holding the lock button when locking should get it working again - or am I on the wrong track. Cheers Peter

the led should light up.. if it dont its either the battery, or led is knackered i aint come across one yet but im sure its poss.
could also be bad contacts if you know the battery is good

I had the same problem with mine after changing batteries. No led when fob pressed. After much swearing and red faced rants found that if i held the lock or unlock button (can't remember which) down as i pushed the batteries in it worked. Just a thought. Maybe worth a try.

Hi Nathan - batteries where replaced last night - when the seller was trying to get them to work for me. Hi Wammers tried both buttons - checked the contacts all seem okay - I think I may be looking at a new remote - we will see.

Regards Peter

check the contacts and make sure the batteries are in properly... need to get the led working before any resync

Okay had the back off again checked the contacts all okay - but still not little red light.... am I looking at a new fob here?

Does the key actually lock or unlock the car? If so it could be the LED. If not it is still most likely a bad connection or a duff battery. Had this on mine, new battery that must have been old stock. Battery should read (from memory) 3.2 volts if the battery is good, if it reads less than 3 volts it's no good.

Also LED's can go dim, operate it in the dark and see if there is any light:D

Key unlocks the door - in fact all doors and boot. No errors on dash except for sunroof - which i will reset once it stops raining here in cumbria.... were going to rename it rainbria.... Will check volts now.
