lost original key for my 1997 p38 purchased new one from main dealer, but it will not unlock the door anyone got any ide were I go from here

If it won't turn in the barrel, chances are the BECM and locks have been replaced by a previous owner. If it turns in the barrel but isn't sync'd up, then you need to sync it up.

hi

i bought a key off the dealer via the usual vin id, when it arrived it didn't turn in either the door or the ignition.

i took it back to them along with a spare blade for comparison and it took a couple of weeks but they got it right.

however i then found the becm had been swapped so had to spend more cash to get the keys to work, but that is a separate issue.

but as i mentioned the first key the dealer supplied was not even close

take the key back to the dealer

No doubt that the locks had been changed along with your BeCM hence why the dealer supplied key was wrong!

It wasn't close because the locks (and BeCM) had been changed, LR keep a record of what locks are fitted to what vehicle. What they gave you was correct if your vehicle was unchanged.

You can't really hold LR responsible for someone else's actions.

Thanks for your help chaps so where do I go from here can I get a new set of locks with key and re program the becm with my faultmate or do I have to buy the locks and becm and fit the lot

hi Saint and Bix

Sorry, didn't explain properly

Only the BECM was changed, the locks were original but initially the key that arrived from the main dealer didn't fit, they then supplied the correct key (actually 2) off the same vin details.

my only criticism of the dealer was the first key wasn't right and they admitted that, just saying this could be the same for esprig.........worth a shot

I deal with these key issues every week for customers that the dealers send to me.

These breakers keep selling parts to swap over, & when the real problems hit, the cost is twice as much as it would of been originaly.
Yes, becm's can be swapped & programmed cheaply to get the car running, & then they get sold, but the next time the car won't start, or you need replacement key's, you're in trouble.
