new here and a prob with 200tdi

hey all, been reading the forum for a while now and finally got myself a disco!
anyway after 6 weeks of fun i have got myself a problem. yesterday after a short run i turned off the ignition and the battery light stayed on, as it was dark i left it til this morning and the battery was dead. i bought a new battery thinking it could be this but the lights still on the dashboard. i was thinking it could be the alternator but don't want to buy one yet incase anybody has a solution.
any help would be great!

check the wires on the back of the barrel to make sure you don't have a short.

sounds like your alt has given up! the problem will most likely the rectifier (diode pack).

Just before you go shopping, have you checked the condition of the fusible links in the main battery +ve cable?
These tend to corrode /rot on 200's and could well cause the problems your having.
