Hello all.
My names Andy and i have just joined here,after a week of lurking in the back ground :D
Anyway i am 2 weeks into new ownership of a 1997 p38 range rover 4.6hse. With l.p.g.
Its my first p38 model so i have got a lot to learn i believe,from the many hours of internet trawling i have done so far ;)
I'm pretty lucky in that everything fitted is working so far !
But the one thing that is annoying is that i am getting a vibration from the EAS compressor getting into the cabin.
I have just fitted 3 new compressor suspension/damper bushes,which have helped slightly,but not enough.
The eas compressor itself seems to work reasonably well in lifting from access mode quite quickly,but i do notice it working maybe more than it should.But that could be because of its loudness !
The suspension stays inflated for at least 3 days without dropping,thats as long as ive left it so far.
So what do you folks think is causing the vibration ?
From the photo's i have seen on repairing the seal,do i see that there is a bearing in the crank area of the piston,where it attaches to the counter weight? Could that be the cause?
Also,when i do come to take off the air pipe (12mm bolt) from the compressor,will i instantly get a fault code due to loss of pressure?
And should the suspension be in the raised position or dropped down to the access position before disconnecting the air pipe?
The compressor looks pretty straight forward to work on,but i would rather ask for your advice first than risk setting off any faultcodes :D

Did you put the new bushes in the correct way up? There is a right and wrong way. Taking the blue pipe off the compressor has no effect on anything.
 
Hi Wammers,yes i first put them in upside down.Doh !!
Then refitted them as their supposed to and no difference.
If i hold the compressor whilst its running,it seems quieter but the noise inside is still there to a degree.

Hi Kooky,just measured my compressor damper bolts. M.5 with 8mm heads.

Hi Datatek,i don'tthink the noise is coming from elsewhere.
As i lift the bonnet you can clearly hear the noise coming from inside the eas compressor box.
Also the vibration/noise coincides with the eas operating only.
Its like an out of balance or a worn bearing type noise to me !
Actually thinking about it, its like the noise that my tropical fish tank air pump makes when its touching something solid inside its enclosure !

Refurbishing the compressor is something I've just done!
First, it does sound like your bearing has gone, but there are replacements available on fleabay!
Buy the complete kit, it is very straightforward to do, just a bit fiddly in places, but nothing impossible. Arm yourself with a good set of Allen keys with 0,5 mm sizes.
Second, you WILL need to let all the air out of the system. This can be done by jumper leads but I would suggest that you go again to Fleabay and buy a ready made lead which will come with the free software that will allow you to let the air out in a controlled way! I have assumed you have a laptop, well most P38 owners bought one in anticipation of ownership;-) You then will have the basis of instant fault code resetting for the future!
What you could do before starting is to take the compressor out of the car and run it from a battery to see if there is excessive vibration.
If you don't have an EAS fault now, then as long as you don't turn the ignition on when the pump is disconnected, everything will be OK when you have renovated it and replaced it.

Make sure you haven't done the nuts up too tight on the bushes. If you do the nuts vibrate against the body. I did with mine, backed them off a bit and now all is well:)

There is no need to let air out of system to remove compressor.
 
Hi Fortgrange,yes ive tried the bolts just hand tight (2-3nm) reasonably tight and not even done up.And no change unfortunately !

Hi Ian,by 'complete kit' do you mean new piston/counter weight/and seal kit as a unit ?
If so,the one place i found on ebay was out of stock.Typical!
Yes i have recently got a lap top in preperation,also got the eas program downloaded,still need to get a lead though.
I take it by just putting the system into access mode doesnt empty the air tank completely ?
Funny enough,if i hold the compressor just off the 3 locating/fixture bolts,the noise is hardly noticable.

Not in stock - Well Sod's law always plays it's trump card at the precise moment doesn't it?

The RSW software has a facility to let the air out, but as said this isn't strictly necessary just to do the pump but I would err on the 'safe' side though.
I have just re-'O' ringed the valve block and interestingly found one trapped 'o' ring from when it was manufactured ;-) Even Land Rover get it wrong sometimes!

Just had a thought, you have undone the three nuts and lifted the pump off it's rubber mountings and got someone to switch the engine on to check for vibrations? Careful though as the pump has quite a bit of 'twist torque' on start up. Also the inlet filter isn't touching the plastic case is it?

Hi Ian, i ordered a new eas to lap top cable tonight.
Just to cover myself for when i do have to take off the compressor in the future :)

When the compressor is running (with its new rubber mountings fitted) and with the 8mm nuts lightly tightened,you can see the unit ascillating up and down at high speeds. Its noisy like this,but if you put your hand on it with some pressure to stop the movement then the noise nearly all goes !
Obviously i cant jog next to the car all day like this :D
Tomorrow if the rain ever stops here,i will go out and lift the compressor off with the engine running to see just how quiet it is like that.
Fingers crossed its just a mounting problem :D
 
When a compressor is rebuilt its important to make sure the piston is aligned perfectly. If its not then it will vibrate badly. The first time I did one I blamed the manufacturer of the replacement piston when it seemed way noisier than before. It wasn't until I put the original back in with a new seal and it too vibrated badly that I realised what I was doing wrong.
Bad alignment also causes extra wear on the seal and piston wall. HTH

I see someone else has just fitted new compressor rubber mounting bushes bought from Ebay and got the symptoms you describe, he put the OEM ones back with the nuts just barely tightened and the problem has gone. Could be you have crap rubber bushes or you have tightened them down too much:eek:
 
Datatek, it was moi that said this, but I spoke to soon. I've recently been driving around with the stereo off and the pump vibration (after fitting the new seal kit) is still being transmitted to the car body and it is flippin annoying, especially since I had no noise at all before changing the pump seal!! I think SpudH could be right, I did the installation of the new seal and piston sleeve very carefully but I hay not have got it aligned properly. I think I am going to pull the pump again and re-assemble....
 
Get well soon mate! And take a look at my other post I am just about to do on the subject of the EAS pump when you get chance...
